1G Nano Tank

Hi everyone! New to the group and have had my Red Sea XL300 up and running for about 2y now. I decided to start this little 1G on my desk in my office.

I got the “small-in-one” from PNW Customs and jump started the cycle with some filter media, macro algae, and water from my main tank.

Hoping to grow some corals and maybe house a tiny blenny or something… if things look like they’re struggling I plan to move them to the main tank and do fresh water - will see how it goes!

At least you can bring your water change bottle to work in your lunch box

Cool rock structure!
PNW Customs makes rock formations specifically for these nano tanks - they're perfectly sized to fit and have shelves for the corals to go on (I got the SOI-02 variant)

Welcome - these tiny tanks are very tricky to manage. Good luck!

I think fresh water would be easier, especially if there were a lot of aquatic plants growing in it. But for now, going to go with some zoas and macro algae and see how it works out. The small-in-one system I got has a three-stage filter (I have a filter mat, marine pure gems, and chemi-pure in the three sections. It has a heater, a cooling fan, and an ATO with a 1400ml reservoir -- all packed into that tiny system lol. Would love any suggestions if people have kept tanks this small successfully!

Daily water changes are probably the best way to manage.

I kept a 0.15 liter tank for 4 months with a gorilla crab. No heater no light no flow, fed 1 pellet once a week and topped up when I remembered. Crab lived for all that time until I went on a trip and couldn't top up

And yes no mistake 150mL

Hard to comment other than I feel this proves the point I was trying to make. But I am not generally against pico - micro pico etc setups, I just feel they are deceiving in pretending to be simple while they are not. What PNW customs came up with some time ago appeals often to the wrong people (smalll tank = simple setup). When you make it work though, it can look stunning and obviously fits in the smallest places.

Welcome! Glad to hear the community outreach table at the CFM suckered you into joining. Now we'll never let you leave! J/k

Did you start the tank recently? Because if you did, you should consider being a part of the Budget Build Exhibition we recently started. A couple of us were considering this exact tank.

@a.little.hypertonic is running this tank with a variety of corals and it's doing great! I'm still on the hunt for an upgraded pump. That's my biggest gripe with it. I wish it had a little more flow. Not necessary but it would be nice.

OK, joined! But I noticed there's a budget cap that I might already be close to exceeding (づ_ど)

You're already close to going over?

Also, do you mind me moving this journal to that specific section for the budget build entries? Or would you prefer to do a different build for that?

Welcome!

I recently watched a ULM series from BRS where they ran a couple tests and concluded that they would not start out a new tank with Macroalgae. I believe it had something to do with stunting the tanks maturation by sucking out nutrients that the tank needed to get its cycle moving along. Food for thought, and there may be alternate experiences here.

Looking forward to seeing the little tank’s progress.
