Anyone have small amount of clean cheato in South Bay?

I would be sure to look for aptasia in it. I had no clue it could have aptasia, I bought some moist cheato (in a bag no water) a cfm last year, and a week later I found it full of aptasia. By the time i threw it away was already to late. It definitely wasn't visible even under a very close inspection.

Seriously the stuff i got was barely moist from a cfm thats been in a bag with no water at all for no idea how long.

Not sure why you have a refugium when you are having to add back in nutrients?

Macroalgae can add DOC to the water as well

DDAM model Dissolved carbons, Disease, fleshy Algae, Microbes. Not exactly equivalent to aquariums but can apply i think

Algae/macroalgae releases DOCs -> stimulates more virulent microbial growth -> increased coral disease and mortality

Fuge is a tradeoff

It can be worth it if it’s needed for nutrient control, and there should be some way to remove DOCs like healthy sponge population or activated carbon. Not always necessary though

Sorry to derail the thread! But isnt carbon dosing promoting the DDAM model? Or are the forms of carbon people add different than DOCs?

Yup. You're adding dissolved carbons, which causes the increased bacterial growth, and then skimming some of the bacteria out of the water (along with the inorganic nutrients the bacteria also eat). It's a similar tradeoff: lowering inorganic nutrients and increasing organic carbon.

This is the main reason that, despite carbon dosing having worked for me w/ lowering nutrients in the past, I probably won't be doing it again without learning some compelling new information regarding DOCs.
