DSB is fuge???

swk

Hey everyone. Quick question - what's in your fuge, and does anyone run a dsb in the fuge? A fella that works at my lfs is a strong proponent of such practice. I take these folks with a healthy dose of skepticism so I'd appreciate some input.

So far, all I'm running in my fuge is chaeto with a par 38 led 3000k bulb.

Thanks again everyone

And mods - can you save my autocorrect fail in my post title?

My fuge is pretty empty. One single coral and a few snails. But I have plans .... someday.... really.
:)

You certainly could run a deep sand bed in the fuge. Sometimes called a "Remote Deep Sand Bed" RDSB.
Among my many experiments, I ran a small box with deep sand in it.
It did seem to help a bit with Nitrates, but not great, and turned into a stinky mess.
So personally, not a fan, if it is just for Nitrate reduction.

That said, running a mud based fuge, with eel grass or similar, might be a lot of fun.
Partly for filtration. But also fun as a different biome.

What are your expectations?
Purely for Nitrate reduction?
Critters?

I think through my limited research, I've decided that I don't know all of what I want....lol. For now, a place for macro to grow for n/p control and a place to grow pods is about all I'm after. If a rdsb will have a great benefit in n/p reduction and pod population than I'm all for it.

I hope that helps narrow down what I truly need

I run a semi DSB in my fuge. I keep about a 4" deep sand bed. I didn't want to commit to 7" so I compromised. I haven't had any problems with it. I use Nassarius snails to keep it churned. Two years now and I don't have nitrates. I also grow chaeto and keep some live rock as well.
