East coast-West coast

Living on the east coast (Pa/NJ border) and knowing most of the really nice stuff comes in through the west coast, I was wondering how you rate the livestock, mostly corals, compared to what we have available to us here on the right side of the country.

Until recently for the most part, pretty much most of the LFS's here have your run of of the mill stuff, there are a few stores that get some of the more exotic pieces, but for a whole, the percentage is low, also most demand a premium price for anything nice.

So how are the stores out there in your neck of the woods?

As someone who worked in that ara for years in the industry I can say that there are some real nice stores out there, but AFA premium corals we are very spoiled in the Bay Area.

Where are you living? I spent time in SW Philly, and Notrhern Delaware.

ONe of the rarest of coral/fish wholesalers is in NY. One of the nicest stores in the US is in Greenwich, CT. The east is just as good as the west (from some one that travels to stores on both coasts yearly).

Bob from ASAP moved to PA to start a coral/fish wholesale outfit FWIW.

I'm originally from central NJ, I'm in Easton Pa which is right along the Delaware River just south of the Delaware Water Gap.

I used to work at a wholesaler in Feasterville, and spent many years in Upper Darby at World Wide Aquarium, and a few at Hooked on Pets in West Chester.

I guess you've made the trek out to TFP huh?

You would be surprised Erick. Though I haven't lived in Florida and had a tank there for many years, my mother still lives there and they don't have near the selection we have here.

You can go collect stuff yourself. Can't do that here (for tropical reef anyways). There are a few people on random forums that do that, there are a lot of laws, but you can still get a lot of nice stuff.

In general though I think East Coast does have a harder time getting stuff. I see a lot of people on the same forums saying the same thing. Most of the really active hobbyist reefers seem to be in California so the best deals easiest/cheapest shipping/pick up are here.

I've never been to TFP, I have ordered some dry goods from them. Everyone I have talked to complained about the health of their livestock. I'll have to check out the other two you mentioned. Thanks

Unless something has changed in the last several years, there is a limited amount of stuff you can actually collect. I used to catch my own fish with a slurp gun in particular areas that allowed for it but corals etc were off limits.

It is pretty sad, it's just the sheer volume of crap they have there that is astounding.

Hands down the midwesterners are the most active reefers.
