got ethical husbandry?

Empty fuge

So the refugium part of my sump is just chilling with a low amount of water going through it. So after my cycle is done I plan on putting some chaeto in it. You think it'd be ok if I put some LS in there while my tank is cycling?

The new LR that I put in my tank Saturday was fully sump-curred and fairly virgin. I've seen no apprecible increase in ammonia, nitrite or nitrate since I added substrate and LR last Saturday (5 days ago). I placed Chaeto in my fuge the day I added LR and sand. It seams happy enough to me and I place an assortment of ricordeas and zoas into the tank this AM. This PM everything was wide open and soaking up the PM sun that floods the room. I know, I know.....algae bloom coming soon to an Elos near you......
The day my fixture arrives.......in go the LPS, SPS and freshly brushed LR from the other two tanks.
Don't mind me but I'd be dumping a bit of LR in your sump while the tank is cycling. Seems to me it will aid and speed up cycling.

I just used chaeto in my refugium. I agree with Erick's reasoning for not using LR in the refugium unless really needed.

So either chaeto or DSB, one or the other? Any advantages/disadvantages to using both? I have some rubble LR that I put in my sump drain area but I don't plan on adding any more.

The less crap you need to clean the better off you are IMO, slice that ham however you want, detritus traps are crap traps, something else to deal with, again that's just MO.

Agreed with Tuberider. But as far as putting stuff in the fuge before your cycle is over, it should be just fine. I mean.....don't macros thrive off of nitrates etc?

I see no benefit to having live rock in a sump/fuge, unless you're using a lot less live rock in your display than you should. Doesn't it just do more of the same except also collect filth? Deep sand bed makes more sense to me or just chaeto.

You can use both Deep Sand Bed and chaeto in a fuge if you have enough room, Deep Sand Bed is more for if you are going bare bottom but want the benefits of a sand bed, you can also change the sand bed easier if it is separate to fight off old tank syndrome.

Alot of people like their chaeto to roll around so that all sides of the ball can get light, it isn't needed but it doesn't hurt and if you are running a DSB it can cause issues with the rolling motion.

Ok ok, so we don't need LR in the sump but it doesn't hurt........... :glasses: (I retract my dump the LR in the sump)

I think group thinking is that simpler is better and less to clean is less to clean....I have no LR in my sump.....

I have liverock in my sump, there's just way too much flow for anything to collect, plus when I pump my water into my tank during my water changes I blast the sump to kick up anything that might have collected. To each their own ;)

Ya know.............I've been wondering what I'm going to do with some Fiji live rock that is at least as old as me hehe from my small tanks. I'm happy with my initial aquascape in the 90 gal and will be brushing off the last of that pesky HA after removing any frags or coloneys that I've epoxied in place. I guess I may well place it in my sump.............why not?????? Let's see what crawls out........

Speaking of sumps........................if you have an auto top off remember that................the fill hose from your reservoir pump needs discharge ABOVE the highest level of reservoir. Why, you may ask? Because once the pump turns off............the reservoir will naturally want to equalize it's level with the level of the discharge hose. Don't place it in the bottom of your sump!!!!! If you do, you'll soon find the fresh water reservoir at exactly the same level as your sump, way above the level that works best for your fuge, skimmer and other in sump devices. I love finding this stuff out early on........

Thanks guys for the info! I'll just put some chaeto in by itself in the fuge. Should I wait for my tank to cycle or is it ok to put some in there now?

I put mine in the sump as soon as I filled the tank. I figured let it start growing NOW. After 5 days on an 18 hour light cycle, I think it grew a little.................
Keep in mind that my LR was pretty virgin with almost no die-off. Water still tests zero ammonia, zero nitrites, zero nitrates after a week of running. The zoa's, paly's and shrooms that I "rushed" in there are opening at first light of day and inflating to monster proportions. The AquaPhoton Plus is coming within a week (along with my fist algae or diatom bloom?????) and I do plan to move all my high light requirement livestock in there within a couple days of beginning the light cycle.

Always pushing it....................

Just wondering what kind of lighting you are using for your fuge? Are you guys running the light on all the time, couple hours a day, opposite of DT light cycle?

It depends on the Macro, Chaeto, you can get by with an on off cycle, but with Caulerpa (legal) you need a long light cycle with 24 hrs preferred.

What is the reasoning for this? Is this to minimize the chances of the Caulerpa in question from going sexual?
Or rather how would a shorter photoperiod effect them?

Yes, as well as the longer the light cycle the more "poop goop" it can fix and you can remove, it's a win , win ;) .
