Filter Floss...

So I am having a few issues with some detritus and other organics ending up in the bottom of the back chambers. The tank came with a foam block that held the carbon and the "bio pellets". I took that out due to info about this tank and that sponge or foam block becoming a NitrAte factory later down the road. Now I am running carbon and purigen with about 4lbs of LR ruble in the back.

Question is, should I maybe try to run some kind of filter floss right at the overflow to catch some of this instead of taking everything out of the back chambers and turkey basting everything out?

Keep in mind a skimmer is not an option, there is no room for one. I am doing a 2g water change every 2-3 days at this point in time. Any advice would be awesome, I can also answer any questions. Thanks!

Can you run something equivalent to a filter sock and then turkey baste it with the filter sock on the tank for a day or two?

I think filter floss is a cheap easy solution. It won't catch everything, but it will catch most detritus. Since its so cheap, you can just toss it every few days to keep it from becoming a nitrate factory. I buy a big bag of polyfil pillow stuffing off Amazon for a couple bucks.

Looks like that went up a bit in price since I bought it last though, so you may want to search and see if you can find another brand cheaper. Any 100% polyester fiber is fine as long as it doesn't have any mildew resistance additives.

Picked up a big sheet of the blue and white marineland filter floss for about $5. Also replace my carbon and purigen. The floss is catching a ton of stuff. I cleaned out the back chambers as well when doing a water change. That was a smelly mess. The tank is crystal clear. Cant wait to see how much crap it catches :)
