Foam in Sump

Turned off the return pump and skimmer last night to feed the fish, and then turned them both back on about 10-15min later. Came back and looked at the tank about 30min later and found a lot of micro bulbs in the display. Looked at the sump and found my skimmer going crazy and overflowing causing bubbles to form ontop of the eater in the skimmer section of my sump which transfered into the return section causing the micto bubles. Turned off the skimmer overnight, and when I went to restart it this morning I found my filter sock full of foam/bubles. Replacd filter sock and turned the skimmer back on. Everything seems to be ok now, but my question is what could have caused this to happen?

Did you add a fresh sock? Some of the 100 micron socks I've been getting lately have caused a few skimmer overflows. Perhaps there was some residue in your feeding vessel?

Just thinking out loud :)

I changed the sock after the foam. The only difference from before the foam to after was a feeding. It might have been someting in the food, because that is the only change in the system from before to after.

I recently had the same issue and attributed it to the new Purolator sock that I had just installed. My take away message is to rinse my new filter socks in very hot tap water prior to using them in the tank. It was like the washing machine had gone crazy and my skimmer went wild!

Alright, I noticed that if I feed alot, the foam goes down. It's like the skimmer is working backward. I've changed 10% water for like 4 straight days and this occurs. Funny, water quality gets better and the skimmer gets pissed off.

Just realized my water level in the sump is too high for my skimmer so I lowered it and all is well. So you may want to check your water level in the sump. Also, paint fumes or other fumes tend to cause skimmer to over react.
