Food & Nitrates

The other day I stopped by an LFS I really like and was chatting with the owner about my nitrate issues and the b*tch of WCs for the last month and a half. He asked me what I was feeding and I told him Formula 1 &2 and Arctic Pods. According to him Formula 1 & 2 are high in nitrates and he’s encouraging my to switch to PE Mysis and powdered Cyclopeeze(sp?). Arctic Pods were optional. It’s all he feeds his display tank which also has anthias which all looked healthy and fat. His take is that the PE Mysis and Cycolpeeze were all pure protein and had no filler foods.

Opinions?

Proteins break down in the nitrogen cycle and end up as nitrate, some foods may contain nitrate but no matter what all "food" will all end up as nitrate, either as fish poop or just decomposing bits of food in the tank.

i noticed since swapping from frozen pe mysis to mysis pheast that my phosphate and nitrate levels are a tad lower. i can be full of shit but i do beleive its working

I know there's no magic bullet to clear up the nitrates...... but every little bit helps.

True, ever little bit does help. Some foods will contain more nitrate, such as those that are algae based.

The food you feed your fishes and invertebrates can have a considerable impact of nitrate levels. On the whole, stay away from processed foods, the majority of which contain cheap fillers. Stick with high quality, high protein foods, such as PE Mysis and CyclopEeze Freezerbar, as these are more fully assimilable resulting in less waste being produced.

And take this with a grain of salt:
Food: Levels of Nitrates and Phosphates in Each
UPDATE 2010-08-15:
Since doing this test, I have pondered my results and procedures and thought about removing post. I will be the first to say please use extreme discretion with my results as not confident in my test procedures and want to rethink and redo tests in future.
