[Guide] Image or Looping GIF in Signature

I haven't seen many people using this feature so I created a guide to doing this.

By the way, signatures are only visible on desktop, and when a phone is in landscape.

Step 1: At the top right corner of the Desktop Webpage, click on your username. If on mobile, tap on your profile picture, which is next to the Bay Area Reefers logo along the top.

Step 2: Near the bottom of the drop down, there should be a link labelled "Signature". Click or tap into this.

Step 2.5: Here, there should be a text box in which you can add and edit a signature, to be displayed whenever you post. Customize this!

Step 3: For some reason, drag-and-drop for image files does not work when trying to attach images to the signature. However, by selecting the Image icon at the top of the text box, you open a text box, which can receive a URL.

Step 4: To turn your image into a URL, we will now take a detour away from the BAR website. You may upload your image to any of the plethora of image-hosting websites on the internet, but because it's free, maintains decent image quality, and is convenient to me personally, I sent the image as a text message in the Discord app. I then right-clicked on the image and selected "Copy Link".

Most other image-hosting websites have an option to copy a link to embed media.

Step 5: Once your link is copied, return to the BAR website and paste the link into the small text box. The image should show up as a resizeable picture. You're done!

Note: Please do not add an image that is large, obnoxious, or distracting (moving / flashing colors). Just because the website lets you make an image super big, does not mean you should! Keep in mind, this image will be displayed on every message you post, so can take up lots of room that people now need to scroll by. Keep it small: a picture of your tank, favorite coral, etc.

Maybe this will allow people to have a picture of themselves as their avatar pic since they can put their favorite graphic or coral/fish pic in their signature line? We’ve been recommending this for a long time since it helps with club cohesion, and periodically bump or feature it-

I wish more people put a face to the name!

Turns out mobile in upright position hides signatures, even ones not including images. Only when turning phone sideways is the signature visible

This isn’t an image thing, it’s (i’m guessing) a “save the amount users have to scroll” feature.

Yes, it’s always been the case I believe

I really hope people don’t do animations. I like to see signature lines because they often have helpful info… but if this gets out of hand might be no other choice but to hide them. I guess the other way to do it is for individual users to block users with annoying GIF signature lines, also obviously not optimal though

Maybe blanket rule “only reef-related or you/your family, and no animations”?

Animations can be fun but I could see it being annoying if a whole thread is full of them in every signature

You weren't around during the late 90s and early 2000s Internet. It was a gif fest that would make your head spin. Mice had balls in them. Monitors were 18 inches thick. It was a harrowing time.
