so since the removal of a 3 year old sand bed my tank has been going through it. I've lost about 15 of 31 fish in my tank. I feel like an idiot for doing it. but whats done is done. Now my tank is going through a cycle again and now I have a serious brown diatom algae problem. lights go on and its everywhere. I've tried to manually remove it by siphoning when doing a water change but comes right back like nothing ever happened. is there anything I could do or am I just gonna have to let it do its thing. its been so long since I had to deal with cyclying a tank. feel like a newbie again.

Skim wet, use tons of Black Diamond carbon (in a reactor if you can) and wait.

When I setup my new tank three weeks and I had a mini cycle and lost a ton of stuff, it happens to the best of us, keep your head up and do lots of water changes :)

I use chemi pure elite carbon and I did over 130 gallon water change in the past 3 weeks. myy nitrates and phosphates are dopping and look good but my poor fishies are dropping like flies.as for my skimmer I am at a loss of words there. My euroreef RS250 skimmer just overflows and I can't turn it on. it fills the collection cup with bubbles and clear water in about 15 to 30 seconds. I tried cleaning the pump which was pretty clean anyways. I tried cleaning the airline tubing and the skimmer just goes nuts. should I put more carbon in there cause from what I read on the euroreef website that I might have too many organics in the water of some sort that makes the skimmer go crazy. is having too much carbon in the tank at once a possible bad thing.

It helps to strip out organics before they breakdown and become algae food.

You can also set your bubble level down to the lowest level and babysit your skimmer, it takes a few hours for them to calm down sometimes.

My question to you is why are your fish croaking? NH3, NO2? Are there visible signs of disease?

sorry to ask a dumb question but what is NH3 and how do I test for it? same with NO2. the fish look like their scales are lifting off of their body, then comes the cloudy eyes, then fins become tattered and they can't swim well, then comes death. weird though cause my vlamingi tang was so fat and had no signs of stress and ate like there was no tomarrow and just died without any signs. as for the firefish that I lost same issue looked fine and no visible signs of parasites or illness and just disappeared one by one. But I think that might have been my dwarf golden moray's midnight snack. No witnesses or evidence of it but you never know. all my other gobies are fine and don't seem to be effected by it. all my tangs gone except for my fowlers. he just got ich and is looking way better. my manderin goby was fat and healthy and found him dead over night. lost 15 fish total so far. hopefully no more. I added reef carbon and still have chemi-pure elite running and you were right about the algae. plus phosguard in phosban reactor. the brown diatom has not come back and I had all my lights turned on. usually when the lights are all on the diatoms are everywhere. thank you so much for your advice helped out alot. how long should I run the reef carbon. it says for only a few days and remove. I run chemi pure elite at all times and replace every 2 to 3 months.

now as for the skimmer. I tried to use it today and it still overflows but at a much slower rate. seems like there was too many organics in the water. the carbon and phosguard are doing a great job.

thanks again for the advice. I was losing my mind with the diatoms. and now my tank is starting to look good again. just a bit empty because the survivors are 2 marine bettas a mated pair. don't know how that happened. 1 mystery wrasse, dwarf golden moray, 1 randalls goby, 1 engineer goby, 1 purple tile goby, 1 flame hawk, 1 cherub angel, my pair of gold band maroon clowns, 1 watchmen goby, and my fowlers tang. so actually lost 18 fish. had 31. feel like a jackass.

Get the fish out, ask for a temporary home, someone might be able to help you out on this. I had Chris (Aquatic Central) care for my fish when I moved to the current place while the tank cycled. I'm thankful for his help.

When you say "slimed up" in regards to the fish that could be Brooklynella, google it and see if that's the case.

AFA your carbon, if there are a lot of organics the carbon may only last a few days especially if it's in a reactor.

NH3 is ammonia, NO2 is nitrite, both an indication that your tank is cycling.

well I took a water sample to derek at OT and he tested them both and he said they were fine. I am checking on the Brooklynella now. I will let you know. thanks.

Well I would have done this and should have done this when I removed all my rock as well to scrub them and swish them around a garbage can full of saltwater, but I thought it would be ok and I was completely wrong. In other words way too late for that. I think the cycle is coming to an end right about now.

looked it up and sounds like it but no slime. looked like some type of body fungus. there was a type of ich as well. all survivors have nothing now and they all eat and are looking great. whatever it was I think it did it's damage and went away. so far at least. I know the ich is in my system still but since I raised my temp to 82 about a week ago there seems to be no visible signs anymore. hopefully after everything is done doing its thing I will be very patient on adding fish again. I'll just try and concentrate on the water for a few months before I add anything. water changes and testing testing and more testing. patience is a virtue that I do have in life but, when it comes down to my fish tank and adding stuff I have very few patience. I have to learn some self control. being unemployed and not having money will help me out on this. LOL. I wish audio visual work was booming again. I love working and getting things done. unemployment is so damn boring.
