I had some fish in qt for a fellow member and came home today to all of them dead. Cow fish has these black marks over its body and I’ve never seen them before. Anyone have any ideas

Got a before pic of the Cow? And the usual questions -- were they eating? Swimming? How many fish? What types? Water parameters checked? Pleasantly engaged in extracurricular activities or water sports?

I didnot take a pic before and Ive never had a cow fish. I was concerned with how many fish he brought over ( 7 total ). All fish ( except the Anthias ) were eating and swimming just fine. QT tank is in in good shape.

well cow fish can be toxic. Not sure about the black marks - can see that well in pics. maybe video better? do the other fish show same marks?

also says Poisonous when stressed or dies. I think that could be what happened to explain all fish going at once

Black spots don't seem like any common diseases.
My guess is that they are just some post-mortem reaction. A bit like rigor mortis.

Check ammonia levels. That is the most common cause of mass-death in QT.

Cowfish and Cucumber poisonings seem similar.
There is concern about some species. But it seems really rare in aquarium ones.
But not a lot of clear scientific evidence either way.

You will likely never know.

With all dying at the same time I'd assume it was the Cowfish in the corner with poison. Probably a better bet than the butler in the study with the candlestick anyway.
