Hey guys! I recently got some brown stringy like algae growing in the tank and also irritating some corals (growing on sps tips and zoa skins), so i took a sample and microscoped it but I might need some help IDing these. Looks like dinos to me but would like some more opinions before i start fighting them off lol. Thanks!

Based on that I would think dinos very similar to their pic. ALSO the post says uv helped kill them. That type goes into water column at night.

Ostreopsis dinoflagellates

I tried a bunch of things for this when I had it, UV did the trick in around 10 days they were all gone. I’d just jump straight to UV. Make sure it’s setup properly, display to display, and 3W / 1 Gallon minimum

They are ostreopsis dinoflagellates

I want to know how you got that density under the microscope.
First try i squashed most of them with the slides, so second time i picked out a string with a toothpick and gently placed the second slide on top and didn't use the clamps on the microscope lol

I see, thanks. I do have a uv sitting around but it is way too big to plumb into the sump so i never set it up. looks like ill have to find a way orz

The most effective way would be to get a return pump in your display and you can connect it to your UV with tubing and then tubing for output back into display. It’s going to look ugly but it’s temporary

Gotcha will do that thanks! I have a 36w uva, any recommended pumps for this purpose?

Use a DC controllable pump so you can adjust the flow to the rate you need. I used a small Jebaoe DCP that I had on hand but anything controllable should work really. What I did was filled a measured bucket and used a timer to figure out the gallons per hour flow rate I was getting.

3 watts / one gallon ..300w for 100 gallon… Maybe you accidentally reversed and meant to say 1 watt per 3 gallons? But nothing wrong kicking another 10 -20 watts on top of the total to get more turnover with stronger uv depending on what your targeting..

OH nice catch haha. Yes 1W for every 3 gallons of water
