Cali Kid Corals

Is there a reason why this Bulb would not work on this fixture???

Hmmm weird.. Are both ends making contact with the end sockets? Some bulbs are shaped differently than some sockets... So the metal cannot connect..

Make sure its unplugged though when you go to fiddle around with the bulb. It'll give you the shock of a lifetime if not..

Like I said... the original bulb and the new bulb are nearly identical... the only difference being a slightly different look inside the bulb. There is no way that contact is an issue. They both slide in the exact same way.
The guy that I bought the Odyssea fixture from typically sells Odyssea, Coralife, or Current bulbs that go with it and said that he has not heard of the Blue Life SPS bulbs which I find odd. He sells the Odyssea bulbs for $25. I am wanting a better quality bulb for this fixture to help my SPS color up better which is why I ordered in the Blue Life SPS bulb. There must be some capability issue here but I’m just not getting it.

I only fiddle around with live high wattage bulbs when my hands are wet and wearing my metal shoes.... ;)

Once I had an issue like that but with a 150W DE brand new bulb, the ballast (IceCap) was buzzing and was thinking it was a defective bulb , tried it on a different fixture to test it and it fired ok then placed it back on the one intended to and worked ever since....???
Does the Odyssea fixture comes with an actual 250W ballast or the stock ones?
They are known to be well underpowered more like 168W...there's a huge thread about the issue; I use the stock ballast to power the BC29 MH bulb I squeezed in there and do the job just right. I have not tested the ballasts (Odyssea) with a regular name brand bulb; I have a pendant with ballast you may borrow to check the bulb if needed to.

Ya... it's just the stock ballast. I don't have another 250w HQI to test it on. Later tonight after the fixture turns off and cools I'll mess around with it some more... turn the bulb around, etc. It could be DOA.... just don't know. My guess at this point is one of two things.... either the bulb is just DOA or the ballast is just to underpowered to push a quality bulb like this. If that's the case I'll probably just have to go back to the cheap 250W bulb they recommend. I am adding two 36" T5's to this set up this week for supplemental lighting. Will be running a Giesmann PowerChrome Actinic + (blue) in one and a Giesmann PowerChrome Pure Actinic (Purple) in the other. Hopefully that will make up some for the cheaper bulb on the halide if that is the direction I have to go.

You can get 250w icecaps pretty cheap. Jsut pick up a spare ballast.. IF you didn't live so far away I'd lend you one to try. Unless you work in teh city. You can try one...

Are you aware of a place to get them cheaper than $130 from Marine Depot? I work in the San Jose area... is this close for you? If you have an extra one how much would you want for it?

Ocean Treasures had them on sale for 120 just awhile back. They are a sponsor of ours as well... Sorry I work in SF but live in the east bay. San Jose is a bit far for me..

I went ahead and ordered an icecap ballast to replace the odyssea. That along with the two 36" T5's I'm adding this week as suppliment lighting should give me plenty of quality light for this frag tank.
