Killer Birdsnest?

Mr. Ugly

Past President
I had a very weird thing happen in my prop tank.

I got a frag of pink Seriatopora, and set it down in the tank a couple inches away from a super healthy blue green tenuis(?) mini colony.

Here's a pic of the acro.

The next morning, the acro had RTN'd and there was nothing left except a white skeleton :(

I ran across this reference on Seriatopora:

"To compete with other corals for space, these corals have short stinging sweeper tentacles and produce toxic substances in their immediate area to intimidate neighbors. Though they can hold their own territory and out-compete peaceful corals, they may still lose a battle with a more aggressive coral."

Is this what happened?

Anybody ever see this before?

Man that is a nice colony :( ..

I have corals very close to my birdnest colony and haven't have any problem. I guess I should move them :) ..

Well, I don't know if that's what caused it. I have a really big green birdsnest in the display tank, and have not had problems.

Here's a pic of another blue green in the prop tank. This one is nicer, and has gotten even more blue.

Grew it from a frag I got from Pam at a MARS swap. It's been fragged a bunch of times since.

Well, I was pretty sad to see my tenuis gone in less than a day. That was RTN with a capital R :(

More of a bummer if it was the pink birdsnest that did it :(

hey norm, is it the pink birdsnest from perry on saturday? if so i got a frag too, put it sandwiched between some frags of two other types of birdsnest, a superman monti and a blue tip tenius.. almost touching everything including tenius (i know, i really need to get a prop tank soon.. anyone got a 30 or 40 gallon breeder for cheap? :D). been two days, no problems at all for me.. but i think i'll move some stuff around a bit again..

okay, and question from me. is it okay to put different millies in very close proximity to one another or do they chemically fight with one another?

Eileen,

When I saw the coral, I thought, "hmm... I don't recognize that one..." Then I realized it was the tenuis and all the tissue had turned clear and was about to slough off. At that point, I just carefully took it out of the tank and chucked it. Nothing left to salvage :(

Kenzo,

Yah, it was the birdsnest from Saturday. But I kinda don't think it was the cause. None of the other stuff nearby had a problem. And I've had that kind of birdnest before without problem. But that RTN came out from nowhere.

My 40 breeder prop will be available. I have a 24x48 acrylic that I'll be prepping to replace it. Doug is interested in the 40, but he has a lead on a different one too.

Don't know about the milles. I've seen my red prostrata kick butt on other acros though.
