Lighting Question

I think it is almost time that I buy a new bulb also, anyone try the 20,000 k bulbs? are they too blue or purple? should I stick with 14,000 k?

20k radium = crisp lighter blue w/ a little violet mixed in
14k phoenix = bluer than the radium but a little washed out IMO
20k XM = supposed to be the bluest but i haven't seen it in person
22k giesseman = not as blue as the phoenix and a little more violet than the radium
20k sps = looks pretty much the same as the radium to me

all above used on 150w sunpod (electronic ballast)

if you liked the color my t5s were putting out the other day, you definitely want a 20k bulb.

hellolights has good prices on bulbs and free shipping.

Thanks for the kelvin rating answers. Back to the original question, what depth in the tank would be considered medium lighting?

well it's hard to say without knowing what kind of light your bulb is putting out. my opinion is that 275 PAR is "medium lighting." that less than stellar stock bulbs you're rocking is probably putting that out at the one-third mark in your tank. without knowing though, it's impossible to tell. anywhere from 1/2 down to the top is a good guess.

what are you trying to place that needs to be in medium light?

An orange cyphastrea, and that frag you gave me.
I have them at about the half way mark in my tank and they aren't bleaching or anything, I don't see any polyp extension from the cyphastrea and I've seen pictures where some do and some don't (meteor shower does, tyree blood red doesn't). All the places I found with google said medium light medium flow.

So I was just curious where medium light would be in my tank.

i don't know. i'll let others chime in.

as far as the valida, it likes light but if you keep it under med-low light it'll develop a green tint that i think is cool. you saw where i kept those frags and i have a lot of light in my reef

FWIW med to you may not be my med which is why I for one use PAR and toss out useless terms like med/watts per gallon, inch per gallon, etc.

No because a 150w 20KK puts out less PAR then a 150w 10KK which puts out less the a 150w 6KK and that is not to mention the different ballasts and bulb manufacturers deal tossed into the mix :)

Shoot, a bit far from me. Maybe before or after the BOD meeting I could swing by if you'll be around. I'd out right let you borrow it but it's a bit broken and I would hate for you to be the one that finally had the fiber optic cable pull out on :(
