Looking for a surf rod

Like the title says I've been looking for a surf rod for a few days now. Looking for a 10-12' sort of a medium build, so I can chuck bait, but still play with lures if i feel like it.

Something like this, the problem is I cant seem to find a good store. I live near pacifica, when I was on the east coast I would have just gone to a dick's sporting good. I went to outdoor pro shop in Oakland and the doors were randomly closed on a Saturday! it's gonna be paired with a Abu 6500 C3. If anyone has some used one laying around I'd be glad to take them off your hands!

Places like Dicks, Cabeles, Bass pro, etc have driven most the small mom and pop stores out of business :( Lucky for me in Santa Cruz we have a few good independents still :)

Go to Hi's Tackle in SSF. If your going to throw lures you will only need a good 9-10 foot casting rod IMO.
Most of the big stuff you see on the beach is for tossing Bait. Because you can put a good snap on a lure you don't need a big long soft lobbing stick. I can almost spool my casting reel with my 9' Loomis.

I can honestly say I've never caught anything on a lure. Me and a friend spent a good year in NC fishing 3-4 times a week and we never got it down. Maybe someone can show me how it's done and make me a convert. I have a few smaller rods that I can use lures on, just looking for that bait casting surf rod so I can put my 2nd pole sticker to use. bait fishing on the big pole and putting some hours trying to figure out lure fishing on the other.

The bait has to be on the run for the lures to work. Birds diving and stuff.
Cast in to the middle of the feeding frenzy.
It's most likely going to be striped bass.
You can get halibut with lures from the beach by bouncing the bottom when they are in.
Go to Hi's Tackle and ask. They will give you all the tips.

That's what I use a crappy generic one at that (one I "found" on the beach when a guy was tossing bait out at me with it while I was surfing :X no fish for him), I catch more fish than my pops who has a giant chucker of a surf rod, it really pisses him off :D

Well, for check surfroad, you can always go with Daiwa Beefstick around $29. They are available in Sportsmart and durable. I wouldn't suggest this for a cast and reel rod though (in case if you are into grubbing)

Yeah, I looked at the beefstick. But i realized I already Had something for heavy tackle use like that, just not as long. Thanks guys, I'll lean toward a light-mid 10' pole. I'm heading down to Hi's as soon as I can find a spare 3 hours, that looks exactly like the type of store I was looking for. now, when's the next sunny day so I can test it out on the shore.
