My UPS died

My UPS (APCSmartUPS 1400) died. I knew the battery was dying. But now, even the lights and fan don't work when plugged in. It may be because the battery is completely done.

But I do not want to buy a new battery (~$100) and then find out that the UPS is totally busted. Anyone know if what I have is normal? Should I buy the new battery?

How long have you had it? those batteries last only a couple of years and then needs to be replaced. The batteries will cause the unit to shut down to prevent a fire. In my case, the unit shut down and when i took it apart, the batteries had swollen and cracked open. This is due from them having growth on the plates and causing an internal short. If you have not already got this fixed, i have the same UPS and have a used spare battery that I can donate provided you want to come to Dubln. Joe

Hey Joe. I bought the unit used about a year ago and the seller said I should replace the battery in about year. I've been holding off in buying the battery because it is expensive.

I took the unit apart. The battery looks good, no leaks, not bulges. After removing the battery, I then plugged in the unit and nothing turns on. No lights, fans, no power to the outlets. Is this expected? (BTW, The same thing happens when the battery is hooked up.)

I would like to take you up on your offer, but I just want to plug in the unit to a good battery and see if it works. I just don't want to buy a battery and then find out it's the unit itself that's busted.

Email me at jcabatu@yahoo.com and let me know how you want to proceed. I just grabbed another battery off the shelf and its reading 25Volts so I know this is good. You can either take the battery or bring your UPS over and we can test it.
