Odd monti

Just thought this was a little bit odd, seems to be a monti with almost acro-like corallites?

There are a few encrusting acropora as well. Looks misidentified to me though, montastreata (sp) looks more like a typical montipora Danae. It has pronounced bumps between the polyps.

FWIW A turbinaria mesenterina would have all the raised coralites densely pointing in the same direction. Dense is relative to say a reniformis. All pointing toward the light. But mine doesn't show a "ring like polyp" in fact during the day the polyps are completely retracted and you can't even see them.

It's a crappy photo, but the growth form seems pretty monti-like, and if the 2.5" description is accurate, turbinaria isn't likely?

But my messenteria does have a #&*@-ton of polyps in a dense spot. Very close to the pic actually. But the polyps certainly don't look like that at all, and the coralites are very organized.
Call Mark?

Mark ? Mark who? :)

Ohwell. Since I posess neither patience nor restraint, there'll be a frag of this sucker in the swap, maybe we can ID it in person.

It reminds me, I have what I believe (as I was told) a frag of an encrusting monti, body is deep red, maroon and the polyps green, I noticed today that it is forming or started to grow like an acro?
I'm not even close to being a good GSP expert when it comes to ID-ing corals.

Yeah,
but you can name em ;)

Jess what is it?

Well, it just showed up a few minutes ago, and it's an acropora for sure (no way does a 3" turbinaria have that many polyps ;) ) ... it's small enough that the jury still out on whether this is a specimen that was shaded / unable to branch for some reason, or an actual plating/encrusting species. It plates beautifully, and is a neat violet color! Could well be a secale...

Anyway, a new toy for ID help is born:
