Pump Choice [Help]

Past President
So my relatively new (less the 6months) Mag 18 decided it wanted to die on me tonight. The pump itself works fine but the plastic/rubber cushion between the detachable part of the housing for some reason seized up only to later free up and essentially melt both itself and the housing due to the friction rendering the pump (at least temporarily) unusable.

Have been considering some other options considering I was running both it for the return to my main tank (with about say 8 foot of head into a 72 G tank) and a Mag 7 which is plumbed through my chiller and into both my frag tank and fuge (29G fuge and about 80 G frag tank with maybe 2 feet of head).

Looking for some suggestions to some viable solutions. Here is what I have considered:

1) replace the bushing and the housing on the Mag18 and return to the status quo

2) keep the Mag 7 in place and purchase a new in sump pump (something other then a Mag 18 that will give me similar flow or perhaps a little less and still be able to push through the head) [Note I have used a Mag 12 before which was sufficient but clearly did not give as much turnover]

3) Buy an external pump that I could use some valves etc to do the job of both pumps but still be able to run through the chiller

Cost is a consideration but by no means an ultimately determining factor. Moreso concerned with performance and efficiency as well as the time and ingenuity it will take to replumb the system.Noise isn't a real consideration since it is in the garage , though i don't want something that is too loud as the sound does carry.

For reference I have a 1" line for my return and a 1 1/2" line for the drain currently to the main tank that I would have to work with. All other plumbing is easily modified to accessable. I am using 3/4" lines for the Mag 7 into the chiller which is then t-d off to the fuge and frag tank with a gate valve on each to control the flow.

Eheims seem out of the question as they won't seem to be able to push through the head, a Quiet One 4000 high Head would likely work for the main tank but it seems that it delivers flow (with the head) similar to a Mag 12 using more wattage. These 3 pumps [ Eheim, Quiet One and Mags] as well as maxi jets are pretty much the extent of my scope of pumps that I have dealt with and know about.

I need to solve this problem relatively quickly as right now I have no return to my main tank. I will likely try to borrow something in the interim to get me through until I ultimately solve the problem but I would prefer to have something permenant in place relatively soon.

Matt,

Thanks. The issue is going to be going to get it. If I remember right you are somewhere deep in East Bay right?

Mark,

Looks like they have none left regardless.

Is there somewhere that has a good reference chart for flow accounting for head that I could use to compare/contrast?

Good thought but worried that it is going to require a mass change to my plumbing in order to even get it up and running. Their site does show that it would have more then enough flow at the head I am looking at to run all 3 tanks at once just concerned about stretching the bounds of my plumbing skills for a perhaps temporary fix.

Bryan,

Pump selection guide on Reefs.org:

You can look up the pump curves for flow/head.

Easiest would be to get another Mag18 and repair the current one for a spare. Then switch them every couple months for cleaning.

Yeah that is the way I am leaning I get about 950GPH with my head height out of it which from just briefly looking up that Dart is pretty similar (though the Dart has a much lower watt draw). Thinking unless it is a true benefit (big energy savings or stramlines my current system using 1 punp instead of 2) doesn't make much sense to replumb.

Hey Bryan,

I can meet up with you tomorrow. I have a guy lined up for a new pump in BayView. Do you have a temp pump that will work until then or should we meet up tonight?

I think the tank will be fine for tonight. Still have flow just no turnover. Lights are off and things seem ok. I could probably just buy it from you if you would rather do that. Then as Norm pointed out I could just have a spare. can you pm me your # and I can give you a call?

Mags have always been tried and tru in my tanks until this crazy mishap. Been using one in every tank i have had for the past 6 years or so. Guess I should just chalk it up to a bad pump.

[/quote]Now that's what I call room service!..............Yes, I would like a ham and cheese sandwich and some milk to go with that late night pump delivery!

Why can't I get that kind of service?

You don't think I actually care about Bryan, do you? ;D

When you have your pump burn out..and I have the replacement sitting around...I'll do it for your corals as well.

Innocent corals shouldn't suffer. ;)

Bryan..all the love.. .you know it. You're money is no good here. But if you have any encrusting montis...perhaps I can see you at sunset?

Just tell me your schedule tomorrow and I'll try to make it.

I have a heater in my tank as well as my sump for situations just like this. The Tunze in my tank is pumping away so I should be plenty fine for at least 24 hours before I start to panic.

Usually not home till after 6:30 but my wife is home all day tomorrow and I just happen to have said encrusting monti at the bottom of my tank already on a plug. A little washed out right now but good to go. The main colony is up higher in the tank so you can see what it should look like.

OK Bryan, thanks for the piece. I appreciate it.

Bills....are you trying to out "nice" me? ;) That Mag12 is a good idea since the 12 and 18 are the same size
BTW Mark, if you do stop by his place, could you drop off whatever corals you wanted to trade for that reflector?

Bryan, email me your address and I'll drop off the 18 pump tomorrow early afternoon.
