Cali Kid Corals

quinaldine and jawfish

I contacted a Florida company that catches fish and sells them online. I asked them what method they use for collecting their yellowheaded jawfish and they told me they use quinaldine. I don't know anything about this chemical. Is this a responsible practice, or is it more along the lines of using cyanide?

I'm also wondering if anyone has advice, in general, for stocking my tank in an ecologically responsible manner? I try to get captive bred/propagated everything when I can. So few captive bred species are available, though. How I can go about buying wild caught/collected animals without supporting over collection and reef damage?

Quin, while not as toxic as cyanide, is still not exactly fairy dust. It needs to be cut with isopropyl alcohol to render it soluble, that screws up the fishs gills, opening them up to bacterial infections.

If they need to use juice to catch fish they do not no how to collect properly.

Levi, how do you know that your LFS isn't selling juiced fish?

You are totally right. I've only bought 1... maybe 2 of my fish since I've been a BAR member and that was when I first joined so I'll claim ignorance :) I'll have to make sure I ask where my LFS get's their fish from here on out but I don't have any plans to purchase anything soon. I know my LFS sells mostly wild farmed carols that's why when I'm looking for something I usually ask around the club first.

Quin is bad mmmkay :)

Jawfish is best done with hook and line, but posers use dope.

FWIW the US is the only country to even offer quin collection permits :(

Blue Spots are all done via hook and line, no chemis used in Baja other the the CN dye from drug smugglers :)

ah, hook and line! I was thinking trap, net, or possibly shovel. i hadn't even thought of hook and line.

So, how do I buy a jawfish (or any wild caught fish, for that matter) that wasn't caught using chemicals? I could tell this or some other retailer that I'd gladly pay more for a quin-free fish, but it seems like that's just an invitation for them to lie and charge more.

Is it just a matter of avoiding species that are commonly caught in certain ways?

All Blue Spots will be quin free. Other then that you can't really tell (not all are quin caught). The fish is what says the most though. If you see one nice and healthy it's most likely a strong fish. Go small, the large adults don't live that long.

Okay. Cool. So, is there any place I can find this sort of information about various species (other than asking you on a case-by-case basis? ;-) )

If not, maybe we should start a page or small site with this kind of data? I'd be happy to help organize it if other people can provide the info.

If your looking for fish ask Bookfish as he works at an LFS and all the fish I got from him were / are very healthy

Unless you are dealing directly with the diver it's very hard to know the wholesalers source and if you they may employee quin or not. I know one of the suppliers for one of the local wholesalers and I can vouch he doesn't use quin :)

Actually, I got a jawfish from Jim that died just a few days after I got it. Not to blame him of course. (I was feeding it the wrong things, which might have been the cause and certainly didn't help) But some things I heard when discussing the situation with people is part of why I started looking into how jawfish are collected.

I found this: http://www.aquariumcouncil.org/

It seems like a good concept but there are only four certified retailers in the US! Are there other such certifications? Any thoughts on this sort of program?

[/quote]Unfortunately that really didn't work out, it's a snake pit you know :p

Like Jeremy said, great concept, wished it worked. They blew thru MILLIONS with extremely meager results.

(I've been following them since before they where MAC)
