Reefing and setbacks

Reefing Update – Early 2026
As 2026 begins, I wanted to share an update on my reefing journey.
The last year had its ups and downs—but toward the end, it was mostly downs. I was planning a smooth sale of my tank since I’m anticipating a move. Unfortunately, a small mistake turned into a big lesson.
I purchased a torch coral from a vendor (I won’t name them—I’m not here to hurt anyone’s business). Within two days, that torch died and showed clear signs of brown jelly disease. At that moment, I knew I was in trouble, especially since my tank was mainly torches and other LPS.
By the following day, all of my torches were infected, and that’s when the heartbreak really began. I tried everything—KFC dips, isolating what I could—but despite my best efforts, I ended up losing nearly all of my LPS.
More than the money, what hurts most is the passion, time, and effort I put into growing those corals over the last two years. It’s easy to be angry and frustrated, but I’m choosing to take this as a hard learning lesson and move forward.
Right now, I’m considering taking a break from the hobby—but I’m not fully sure yet. I still have my frag tank running, all my fish, and a few corals that survived.
If there’s one takeaway from all of this: always quarantine if you can—especially when you have a tank full of corals.

Thanks for reading, and wishing everyone a healthier, stronger reefing year ahead.

Sorry to hear about your setbacks Ayman. While the loss sucks, know you got folks on here to help get you back on your feet when you're ready.

Best of luck bro..looking forward to seeing your future build.

I hear you man! That last half of 2025 hit hard. My main tank suffered, and some setbacks left me wanting walk away as well. Long story short that tank came down yesterday, and I’m working on organizing a new tank journal today lol.
In building the new system I re-realized my passion for the hobby. All the different skills and bit of knowledge we need. The ability to react quickly, maybe in some jimmy rigged way just to get by for now, or sometimes even better than the original plan! All the challenges we embrace for the passion of creating something that’s our own…idk…just wanted to say I feel it, sometimes a break is good, and tempting, but I’m sure glad my wife didn’t let me return the new light when I was going to lol.

Sorry to hear that. I understand brown jelly isn't a joke. I've never mentioned it on the fourm but may have told a few people about it in person.

3 -4 months ago. I moved hammers to a different tank. Started with probably 60 of them. Lost 20 of them.

Moved them to frag tank they did OK for a few weeks. Than I literally lost like 35 more over the course of 3 days. I only managed to save the last few by basically throwing away all those that had and signs of bj. Many of these I lost was 5 heads plus.

Yet I'm back up to about 12 hammers plus about 5 dbtc ones I'm still holding for a chain.

If that wasn’t enough I also lost 10 torches while all that happened.

Take a break if you feel inclined to do so. However I recommend staying the course these things happen and they suck. Yet we always comeback better than ever given time. Keep one foot in the door who knows what the future will bring. I wish you the best whatever direction you determine to go.

I would consider keeping the tank going with a few softies than you can grow out. Super low maintenance. Feed, skimmer clean, and top off and nothing else is needed. That gives you something to look at and grow, but not worry about coral disease. That is where I am currently at with my big system because I keep killing any hard corals and also had a stint on BJD run through my tank. I am almost ready to throw another volley or corals at the tank, but am running out of time till my next human frag shows up.

Why do you think you're struggling with SPS this time around? Congrats BTW :)

Thanks.

I had some flow issues where my wav pumps weren't getting recognized so I only had 4 of my 9 wavemakers going for a couple weeks. Cyano took over a lot. I ended up getting my mp60 out and putting that on the tank just in case the wav's went out again when I came back to the bay for xmas. I am probably ready for another try with frags. And thinking of moving away from wav's to something else, but I already have so many power inverters that are piled up, I don't really want to add more to that, lol. Also have had 2 lights down for a while due to communication issues. I think I really just need a few nanny days so I can work around the house. Full time dad of an almost 2 year old is not trivial. And it will get worse in less than 2 months.
