silicone and super glue

Is it essential to use only products such as silicone and cyanoacrylate glue made specifically for reef tanks? Or can I use the equivalent products bought at a hardware store?
Also, I bought a frag rack made by Eschopps(clear corner rack) and the magnets started to rust. I immediately took it out of the tank of course. Was this just a defect or is this product known for this problem?

Well, if you know what specifically to check for, hardware store products are fine, otherwise no.
For example:
They have pure silicone that is quite aquarium safe.
But they also have silicone caulk that is full of nasty things like mold inhibitors.

Look at various DIY threads, here and RC.
There are discussions on those details, and what specific alternative brands are good.

Agree. When it comes to cynoacrylate though, I think any will work. The gel kind is usually the best type for aquarium use.
