So what do you use to test nitrate levels ?

I have been using API test kits but they always seen to give you a generalized idea of where your nitrates are .....I wondered if a Hanna Nitrate meter would be the choice....but I read the description and it said "freshwater use only" , other's use the Hanna meters but I'm wondering if its only for testing phosphates in saltwater set ups?

Any input would greatly be appreciated.

I use Elos NO3. Also gives a general idea where your NO3 is.

Salifert makes a good kit, I don't test NO3 in my personal tank though, along with PO4.

I just taste the tank water using one of those little spoons they have at ice cream shops. If it tastes too nitratey I know it's time for a water change.

Can you be a little more specific ? is the spoon plastic or wooden ?

Plastic. It's black PVC.

Using a wooden spoon is not recommended because it can absorb nitrates and foul your calibration.
