I recently noticed this yellow-green stringy stuff developing on afew of my rocks. Have never seen it before. Can someone please ID this algae?

Oh no... after searching for images of dinoflagellates, seems like that's what I have in the tank. Bad news. I thought I was doing well, using RO/DI water, chaeto in the fuge, 10 gallon water changes each week, skimming constantly, changing filter socks twice a week, new 20K bulbs on for 6 hours/day, and using ROX carbon inside a media bag in the sump (added this week). Will try siphoning it out, and will research the dinoflagellate issue further.

+1 to dinos. I had some in my tank as well, but didn't give up on the fight. Carbon, water changes, turkey basting, less feeding and less light helped. Not sure which actually worked though.

Erin, the RO membrane is about 8 months old, but has had relatively light use, and my source water has low TDS. Just in case, I'm going to test the output with my TDS meter.

Mitch, thanks for sharing your experience with dinoflagellates. I'm going to switch to more frequent, smaller water changes. Siphoning the affected areas last night seemed to help.

It looks like dino - not all is lost.

It is beatable.

All different kinds of solutions - no light (covering up the tank) works for some - just a few days along with a big water change. Chemi-clean seems to make a dent in it. I've done a combination of the two on a smaller tank (58g) and after third with no light and a big water change the dino issue went away.

Is it only on that one rock in the picture? remove the rock and cleankill it. It looks like dead rock anyways.

Given how phytoplankton divide, simply removing the rock will not remove all the cells. There is a reason it showed up, that is the best thing to search for rather then stop gap solutions that will not be a final answer :)

Just my .02 cents :D
