Reef nutrition

tribbitt's 20L Nano Build

Wow! Your tank looks awesome! I can't wait to get my tank growing like that. But first I need to stock it. I really like the mixed reef and will be following your footsteps. I'll be starting 5gal weekly water changes. You inspired me to buy a Maxima from Clearwater and saw he had some of that red macro and bought a frag of it too. I didn't check my clam for snails but will do so now.

Post-swap update! This one will be a little short, I wasn't able to get enough satisfactory photos of everything and time has been limited recently.

The bailed torch is still chugging along. I'm experimenting with a GSP back wall. Algae has come back so I purchased an urchin who has been mainly acclimating. He covers himself in macroalgae, doesn't eat much, and stays in mostly one spot, and I'm a little worried. It's been 3 days

Anyone have ideas for killing Ulva? It's everywhere and I can't exactly employ a fox face

Happier updates:

The clam is, well, happy as a clam. To the left you can see my bounce post-split, it's still a half-circle lol :p

The hammer garden is FULL and I'm so happy about it.

Got a little bunch of GMKs from the swap and they've surprisingly not melted!

IMG_6977.jpeg

My acros have taken off again now that I have enough buckets to facilitate water changing. My ORA Hawkins echinata has like 12 growth tips, the smoothskin pictured below has lengthened a couple of its axial corallites in the way that they do when they start growing after a stall (though they aren't in the pic), etc.

Now that my pithos is no longer digging under it, my RFA can finally open up:

And the FTS (yes it's a little blurry, no I don't know why):

Wow, i thought i had alot if coral in my biocube32 at one point, your like a Magician with coral placement. Your tanks looking awesome. I always thought about getting a clam but never commited. I somehow talked myself out of it each time.

Things are too packed. I'm in the process of freebieing/selling/trading corals I got that I find don't fit my tank, and freeing up space for corals to grow (or to add corals I've got on my bucket list lol)

You should get a clam! They’re not that expensive for being such an amazing organism and will be a good addition if you take care of it. Start with a healthy animal and you'll realize they're much hardier than they're often made to seem, provided some basic needs are met :)

Lol each time i found a video or seen someones die, and it's like ugh. I will try to get one at some point. What are you feeding yours and how much par is it getting?

I do not feed mine. (I guess I broadcast reef roids the first week, but that was to raise phosphates mostly, and the clam didn't seem to like the particles.) I skim too, but my nitrates/phosphates sit at 25.0 and 0.02 respectively. I give it 200-220 par, the sandbed is so bright from internal reflection off the glass.

Biggest thing about clams is starting with a healthy specimen, having some (but not sky-high) nutrients, and bright, bright light. Mine has gone through 2 (!) freshwater dips when I was worried about pyramid snails too, they're very hardy

Ulva is a nightmare, but hydrogen peroxide really works well on it. Probably good to dip anything it starts to get a foothold on. I vaguely remember hearing mollies might eat it though.

But it’s on many things all over the tank, kind of everywhere. Mollies might be cool but I don’t want to go through the catching process again if I end up needing to

I’m noticing bryopsis coming back too, I hope I don’t need to use fluconazole again

@tribbitt Your tank is looking awesome! Are you having any issues with Coral warfare since they all seemed packed (hammers/frogspawns)? And the blastos underneath them.

No warfare issues with LPS and softies yet. There are some things that touch but there seems to be no damage (or irritation) at all. Only ever get aggression from acropora, which melts other sps.

Recently have been shuffling corals and thinking about color theory, placing corals in more contrasty spots. I have way less red macroalgae now so the tank's lacking in warm colors.

I have started performing more water changes and I've seen some more growth so I'll keep doing them. Easier than dosing a dozen traces by hand anyway, especially for a tank of this size

I'm facing small tank problems. The happy medium between "overgrown" and "barren" is really small so I have to frag often, and the frags can't be as big as I'd like. I also don't really have much space to put the frags.

I need to find more people to give corals to lol, I have a bunch of frags I don't have space for in my tank, but it feels bad tossing them.

Coral highlights:

GMKs, started with 2 adult and 1 baby polyp at the swap, now with 6 adult polyps and a few babies

Goldenrod isn't very golden, but it's been growing slowly

Got some sexy shrimp and will try to breed them.

This amazing (and very large) piece of Calfo pulsing sinularia from @Kensington Reefer has settled in nicely. Haven't found an angle that showcases it as well as I'd like, but once I do there's going to be many more pictures. Maybe top-down? It's very fuzzy and pulses slowly with pumps off.

Happy clown in happy alveopora

This is a dated photo of the 20 gallon, but you can still see my tank is getting packed. Prime real estate is getting rarer, but there's no end to the cool corals I want :p Tank upgrade got vetoed immediately however lol

What petition do we have to sign to get a bigger tank?

I took some pics right before I took all the montis out earlier this week. The tank will probably look empty for quite some time after this, but I hopefully have some pieces coming in soon(?) to fill in the SPS.

I tried for the first time to put a video on YT, but the compression took a real bite out of the quality lol
