water flow- mj1200's vs CL

So right now I have 3 mj's ranging from 900's - 1200's running in my tank on a chauvet timer. There's something wrong with the chuavet I think, as one pump constantly chatters when it's switched on. This happens regardless of which pump is plugged in there.

Anywhosit, while that setup is great in terms of low power consumption I'm finding it's not quite as much flow as I'd prefer in my tank. I was thinking of running a simple closed loop, running through a SCWD and then through 2 bulkheads into the tank. My pump of choice ATM is an Oceanrunner 2500. I've used one before as my return pump and loved it. Plus, I think it's one of the more energy efficient in terms of W/gph. I'm not 100% sure though if I can run it externally (I think I can though). Anyone have any other suggestions in terms of pumps, or tips in terms of drilling acrylic tanks while stil partially filled? Thanks guys.

I've thought about it, but how do they do with constant on/offs? Also the space is a small issue with worries about the flow being too much in the short distance I have.

Tank is a 24x20x18

You can take out a powerhead if it is too much?
FWIW, I don't think any powerhead handles being turned completely off and turned back on too many times too well. I believe many controllers limit the amount of electricity going to the pump which slows down the pump, not stop it, so it is okay for the pump.
Then again I unplug my MJ once a day to feed my fish.

The one pump that chatters could have something stuck in the impeller or something is causing the rattle i.e. pump body against wall of tank.

I am not a huge fan of SCWD as they seemed to clog in their first generation (things may have changed now) - almost overflowed the tank once. I literally disconnected it and promptly threw it in the garbage.

The flow output was greatly reduced and that was through a Mag5 pump.

Maxi Jet modded pumps may be the way to go for you.

Drilling filled tanks is a no-go. The last person I know who drilled into a tank while it was filled tank failed

I'm not a fan of SCWD either. If you can, get the Oceansmotions device. The 2 ways or 4 ways are great.

I suppose I can give up on the hopes of having alternating gyres going on.

A_lee/Raddogz- it's not the specific pump that rattles, but it's that certain outlet. No matter which pump I plug in there, it chatters a bit.

I definitely understand the downsides of SCWD's, but I've used them on the last 2/3 of my tanks. And especially in a CL situation, nothing will really overflow.

I'll definitely look into modding one of the mj's. They do have kits for the 900's or 600's, right? Also, do they handle being turned on/off frequently?

And Phong, I'll look into the Squirt, but that's a little pricey for what it does and what I need right now.

I second the maxi-jet mods. If you are going with the mods, go with Sure Flow instead of Eco-system mod. It's better bang for the bucks (you also get the MJ1200 impeller w/ the kit!) and it's put out more flow. The price is about the same at most places.
