Well,
Over the last two weeks I have been doing a deep clean and overhaul of the tank: cleaning out pumps, skimmer, wavemakers, detritus from the sump. Today I decided to clean out the drains and returns along with adding some random flow generators to the outlets. I did not realize how loud my tank had become or how much the main drain had been compromised by sponges and other random growth. The emergency overflow used to be minimal. Apparently, it had been putting in some extra effort because the strainer on the main drain was partially clogged. I removed it today, cleaned and scraped it. The pic below is the T intersection of the return. Just curious what all that stuff is growing on the tubing. It was all over the strainer and in the overflow chamber. Cleaned out what I could in the overflow. Once I had everything back in place I had to make adjustments to my ball valve, and I was able to increase the overall flow of the pump while still maintaining a very quiet aquarium. Surprising how easy it is to get used to the overflow noise when it increases gradually. All I can say is make sure you keep up with the maintenance.
Next up I am going to rearrange my sump a little bit and try some chaeto again along with replacing the bulb on my UV filter. The work never ends.

Gerry

I hope not. Haven't seen them in the tank or the sump. Just in the overflow, black clumps of crumbly stuff.
