When would you ACCEPT a coral eater in your tank as part of a "real" ecosystem?

Hello All: I am confronted by a tough decision. I bought a very pretty and healthy appearing Dendronephthya. It has inflated nicely after adapting to my tank and seems happy. At the time of the purchase I noticed a funny little bump tucked under one of the arms and suspected it might...

    Sending a private message?

There is no "message" link in the top of my browser. How do I initiate a PM? I read through the prior "new message system" thread but can't see any "message" link in either the menu at the left or the top of the page. TIA. Joe

    My fish tank

This tank makes me drool... someday... someday. I would like to sit at your feet like an acolyte listening to the Buddha speak.

Striated Anglerfish images (for Mr. Ugly)

The leaf fish is between 2-3 inches. He's a character... I'm training him to eat from the tongs or my hand. He's got a great appetite.

    Anemone split

Do you feed anything in particular to your anemones, or is it just any meaty seafood?

Striated Anglerfish images (for Mr. Ugly)

As promised, this is my striated anglerfish, aka striped frogfish, Antennarius striatus. His name is Angus. He likes candlelit dinners of damsel or brine-stuffed goldfish, romantic walks on the sandbed, and lounging among the rocks while lying in ambush. His arch enemy is Bozo (the...

    Blue-lined Butterflyfish for Aiptasia?

I put one in yesterday. So far it just hangs under the rock in the Nanocube and doesn't seem to have eaten anything... but obviously it is still early. Thanks for the input!

I love the ocean, and little self-contained pieces of it!

She's watching, peripherally! :) She'll probably wind up here on her own, too, at some point. I bought a couple rocks at Atlantis in Hayward with good macro algae on them, haven't figured out their names yet; and a couple others came from a friend's tank who has had a longstanding tank.

I love the ocean, and little self-contained pieces of it!

Duh.... I forgot to add a couple of the REEF pictures. That's the whole point, right? These are from the Similan Islands off the western coast of southern Thailand. My fiance and I got engaged on that reef last year. There was a nice little sandy patch in about 50 or 60 feet of...

I love the ocean, and little self-contained pieces of it!

Hello, everyone... I guess I need to formally introduce myself so that my future oddball comments and strange questions are seen in some sort of overall context, right? :) I have two tanks at present but someday it will be much more. My fiance, Tina, is really into the tanks as well and...

A valuable (and costly) lesson learned -- not all "reef fish" are in fact reef safe

Yeah, all good points... I'll post pics of the Striatus in another thread. I've still got to do an intro message, so I guess I'll do that next. thanks Joe

Great! I'll trade you for a proven hungry bluefin damsel! :)

A valuable (and costly) lesson learned -- not all "reef fish" are in fact reef safe

Well then, with any luck maybe they'll come back. I really liked them. Of the maybe 30-40 polyps that were on that little rock, there appears to be 4 or 5 left. I'd love to have the problem of seeing them as a pest! Better than the stupid Aiptasia.

A valuable (and costly) lesson learned -- not all "reef fish" are in fact reef safe

Well, I guess it serves me right for not asking the opinion of the experienced reefers here first.... but yesterday I added a Bluefin Damsel (Neoglyphidodon melas) to my 12g nano, under the long-held but apparently false impression that all damselfish are reef safe. I'dB always thought they...

    Blue-lined Butterflyfish for Aiptasia?

Hello, All... I'm new to both reefing and BAR. I'll post an intro in the New Members section soon. I have a 100 gallon fish and LR tank that's been up for about 3 months. I also have a 12g nano that's been running for about 6 months and doing well, but now has Aiptasia that came in...
