I donated over 100lbs of live rocks to a reefer that has a business cleaning about 50 tanks per month. I didnt know he have a business until his friend picked them up. Thse are big expensive shelf rocks. I got his word that he won't sell them.

I understand donating it and it's gone. I asked for one piece back. He replied it went to his friend's tank and already aquascaped into the tank and can't be removed. This is only 2 days after I donated.

Oh well. I asked for a picture twice and he ghosted me.

Is this person trustworthy?

I think I have some shelf rock peices in my sump if you want some. They aren't as big as you asked for but decent sized. I would recommend maybe bleaching them as they would be from 210 that has ich. Beyond possible ich they are perfectly clean
 
I assume no one wanted these here? We would have a record of this donation.

Giving something away for free could mean two things IMO, a) you are happy you no longer have to hold on to it, or b) you did someone a favor (or a combination of both). If one or both applies, I do not regret giving something away, regardless of the circumstances, but there are always grey areas :).
 
Funny how it works when you don't need something it sits around the backyard and garage for days, months, years, then the moment you give it away you need it two days later.
Maybe next time when you give away stuff ask them more questions on what they plan on using it for, check to see if they are an active member, do they have a tank journal?

I believe one of the topics the BOD discussed in a meeting was around PIF items and tagging who you gave the item to so there is transparency who received it and not abusing BAR's generosity. However, we don't want to have to be policing what people do when they give and receive free items either.

Look on the bright side, you don't have 100 lbs of rock taking up space at your house :D
 
yeah its a gray area.. I don't know what happens to my donations after I get out of Goodwill.. Yeah, they dont make promises that they will not use it to churn money which probably your guy did.. Why didnt you donate them to a supporting BAR member (or you did offer it here first, I might have missed it)?
 
Max offered it to me. I know who he gave it too. I don’t think he’s a member here. But like Tu said. It’s always when you give it away then you need it the next day. It’s just very unfortunate.
 
The fact that the person who is isnt a member got the item from someone who is a member doesnt that make it wrong and defeat the purpose of the pif rules?

I can see if it was a single item obviously it was given away but this is “multiple” pieces of flat rock how could one flat piece not be returned after receiving all that. Thats just wrong in my opinion.
 
It was on FB. I think the guy is somehow associated to BAR. He ghosted me on 2/22 (10 days). Within two hours of this post, I received the picture. However, they're in a tank, sitting dry and don't look like my rocks.

When donating stuff, I hope they be of good use, not monetary benefit. If it's Goodwill, I expect the good be sold at a deep discount to less fortunate.

I donated a Stanford lab tank, then found it posted for sale on marketplace.
Donated a big chunk of macro algae, the guy posted for sale on marketplace. He said it was too much and doesn't know what to do with them. Re-donate them..duh. Also gave him the IM20g. Wonder when that will show up on MP. LOL

PIF does not require membership. But it would feel kind of lame if they promised you no selling and then sold it
 
And people wonder why I’m so bitter and angry all the time. @Kensington Reefer , @jhuynh LOL. That’s one thing I really hate about the reefing community. There are so many roaches and come up people. I’m not saying this guy that max gave it too sold it but I’ve seen it happen time and time again. It dose jade you after a while especially since we are all supposed to be in this together.

On a different note: Max is an overly generous person. He’s given me and others many things over the years. It is true tho. I’ve seen max get screwed big time because he is so generous.

Personally, If I decide to give things away I could care less what they do with it. You did me a favor to clear up space. Thats where the buck stops.
Keep it and use it? Ideal.
Sell it? You must need the money reallll bad, all good.
Throw it away? You are my garbage man. Thanks for picking my trash!

I usually offer free things here on BAR first. If no takers after a week then I'll post on FB.

He gave them to a friend who resold them. Promise kept and problem solved. You can sleep easy now!

On a serious note, I have a bunch of junk laying around. I should really give it away at some point! If it shows up on marketplace I would not be pleased!
