Free Berghia Nudibranchs – San Rafael, CA

I have about 15 Berghia nudibranchs available for free as part of a pay-it-forward effort. They’ve done their job in my tank, but I’m all out of Aiptasia, so they’ll need a new home soon before they start to starve. Ideally, they should be picked up tomorrow (Monday) or Tuesday.

I’m happy to split them up—if a couple of people want to grab five each, that works, or if someone wants to take all 15 and distribute them to others, that’s fine too. Just want to make sure they go to good homes!

You read my mind. I’m picking up the Berghias tomorrow from @dandemeyere. I also acquired tons of Aiptasia from @Kensington Reefer a few weeks ago. If successful I will be contributing 30 Berghias back into BAR.

@dandemeyere id recommend keeping one or two for maintenance. Even though the display might seem clear of aiptasia, guaranteed they're still lurking in your overflow, pipes, sump, and will eventually make their way back in. Happened to me twice.

While true, in fact 100% true, the problem is if they're not eating aiptasia they're not surviving.

One thing to be careful of is that they are easily eaten by peppermints and wrasses. So if your lazy peppermints didn't get that job done they might wipe these guys out before they start reproducing.

I thought my tank was clear of Aiptasia for over 6 months now. But every time I add a frag to the tank some real fat nudis come to inspect and clean the frags. There must be small ones in the crevices keeping the population alive.

Once you have aiptasia, you'll never be rid of it. It just becomes a maintenance task - some require (may) more work than others.

FWIW I can super highly confirm that berghia nudis can survive with wrasses. I've seen my wrasses ignore ones floating in the water or suck in and spit them out. Similarly @dandemeyere had a bunch of wrasses in his tank last time I saw it, pre-aiptasia destruction by nudis.

I can't say how/why it works (someone mentioned in a diff thread it may be they ingest the stinging cells for defense) but I am shocked it does work.

Luckily for me, I have neither peppermints or wrasses (hell, don't even have fish). I'm just speaking of the past, as per the effectiveness of peppermints.
