Only Filtration: Filter Floss l Thoughts?

Would love to see if any of ya’ll are only using filter floss as your source of filtration. aka, no skimmer, scrubber, chemical media etc..

Any thoughts on this approach?
Anyone tried and had any luck?

I’m currently doing it on my 3g pico budget build. Only filtration is a HOB with filter floss I change weekly. I’d much prefer to have a skimmer, but the tank is too small and it wouldn’t fit the budget anyways.

Skimmers are amazing. The reef octopus on my main tank has been pulling sludge non stop for many years with very little maintenance.

Anything seems doable with an appropriate water change % and schedule. If you hate water changes, it may get tough long term. I think some folks here have used tropic marin salts with carbon sources built in to help with nutrients.

A skimmer is the most beneficial filtration method. Granular activated carbon in a media reactor the second best. Everything else is questionable. Filter floss is probably on the last place - I still use it but for noise reduction only, which is silly, but have not found a better solution. I will celebrate the day when I can stop using filter floss.

For a 3gallon tank, I would do 1-2cup waterchange weekly and skip floss completely. Probably siphone out detritus every few months.

For me in a 200g tank

Filter sock = clean glass everyday and change sock 2 very weeK

Filtet pad = clean glass every 3 days and change pad every 4 weeks.

3 gallon, agree with changing small amount of water often. Don't think there's a skimmer small enough.

What size your tank and what’s in it? A lot of us run just skimmers and no mechanical filtration at all. I would highly recommend a skimmer if you can fit one.
