LF: Reef Octopus Varios 4-S controller for skimmer or EE board knowledge

Yes, shorted out should tie it to ground, so off. You need to fix that short before you even think of creating a new control voltage. A thought for control voltage: Find an old cheap 9V DC wall wart power supply. Just connect it directly. Gnd-Gnd, 9V supply -> 1K resistor -> Input. That...

The great light debate - hopefully not…

I would totally go back to DIY. Not because I can do better on color choice or LEDs. Not to save money. It is because almost every fixture out there is poorly sealed and uses fans. That means they eventually fail in our humid salty environment. And the rare few that are fanless and sealed seem...

LF: Reef Octopus Varios 4-S controller for skimmer or EE board knowledge

Weird, it actually looks like that connector was hand solder (poorly) at one time. It could be scorched from current/heat, especially with what looks like a thermal pad next to it, but it does not seem like it. That control port likely expects a voltage, not a resistance. You can generate that...

    Big Bubbler for pH?

Tidbit: Waterfall style algae scrubbers are also really good for CO2 exchange. You get a big rapid waterfall. You get a very rough surface due to algae growth. And yes, you get algae taking in CO2 and releasing O2.

    Big Bubbler for pH?

Opinions; Low PH, below around 7.8, causes problems with corals. It does not kill them directly, but if any other parameters are slightly off, you can get RTN quickly. So perhaps a better way to put it is that is makes them stressed and sensitive. Above 8.1, and I think there are minimal...

    Big Bubbler for pH?

I run a big airstone in my sump. I use that Hygger pump. Super quiet. I go on step further, and have the airstone under a powerhead. It chops the bubbles further, for more surface area. I also distributes the bubles all around the sump.

Tank plumbing help (asking for a friend)

My suggestion: 1) Plug the 4 holes in the main section of the DT. That old closed loop thing is risky and generally no longer used. Ideally with silicone and glass, so it is very permanent. 2) I would put a "Durso" overflow in each overflow. Google it. Lots of drawings on the net. Usually there...

Opinion on bacteria & carbon dosing

Tips on PH: 1) Think about airflow between your tank and the room. Does your stand tightly seal your sump and skimmer? Do you have a tight canopy on top? That can cause local CO2 buildup, and low PH. 2) Skimmers are not as great as they seem for CO2. Tons of bubbles, but all jammed together...

Super glue & sand rock bonding technique

I do want to mention there are three ways to do epoxy: 1) The purple stick you buy from LFS. That is a combination of clay and epoxy that you mush together. It crumbles, and it does not get into the pores of the rock well. Generally very poor. 2) Quality liquid two part epoxy, mixed in with...

    Adult emperor angel

That fish is one of the reasons I have always wanted two tanks. One for fish, like that and all the other butterfly/angels. The other for coral. Someday....

    Bleached Coral from shipping stress?

Pictures? Retracted polyps is normal. Give them a few days.. True bleaching is not. Tissue necrosis is not.

Opinion on bacteria & carbon dosing

Tons of things. Flow + Lighting + Water quality + Food + compatible fish + compatible coral + Detritus + Algae + Cyano + etc. For food, I would generally recommend sticking with quality live, frozen, or bottled food, not chemicals or bacteria. For water quality, you have to test first, see if it...

Opinion on bacteria & carbon dosing

Note that it is not really "versus". You can do both, and some really advocate that.

Opinion on bacteria & carbon dosing

Reminder that the best nutrient removal is ......... CORAL. :) Seriously, once your tank is well established and chock full of coral, a lot of the nutrient issues go away. A fair number of people end up dosing nitrates.

Opinion on bacteria & carbon dosing

I have never noticed O2 level problems from carbon dosing. Just don't suddenly does a ton all at once and produce a bloom. It did mess with my PH a bit. Carbon dosing did reduce nitrates, so I believe it is a very viable PO4/NO3 reduction method. I went back to my algae scrubber, but that is...

    DIY Fuge LEDs, Lumia 5.2

Ran into a problem today with the Lumia LED setup. One of the lenses simply popped off and fell into the tank.. Annoying. Easy enough to fix though. Just a bit of silicone. And it has been there for 6 years now, so I guess not so bad. Compared to how many fans I have had to replace on my...

Why does it cost money to efile?

Funny thing... I moved buildings at work, and accidentally left all my pens/pencils in the drawer in my old office. Never noticed for a while, and even then never bothered to get some new ones. Until .... To change the preset on my desk height, you need a pen to press the special tiny save...

Alameda Reefers - who are you?

Found it. A few people have their names on the map. But it never really caught on. https://www.zeemaps.com/map?group=2329301

Why does it cost money to efile?

Human reading them? Nahh, they feed them into a scanner, and let computer do it. Which of course, makes it even more absurd to print and mail. The whole thing is absurd for most people. The govt has all the info from the banks, and actually runs a tax program to make sure you did it right...
