    What Controller should I Get?

I've actually been leaning towards the apex system. I'm attracted by the ease to set it up. But i will read a bit more about the other options. thanks everyone!

    What Controller should I Get?

Thanks for the tip. I'm far from being a computer programmer though. Is it relatively easy to set up?

    What Controller should I Get?

I'm looking to purchase a controller for my 180 gallon mixed reef. I'm currently between the Aquacontroller vs. the Apex units. Anyone have recommendations? I don't travel that much, but like the idea of being able to check my tank's parameters with my iphone. Just not sure its worth all...

Cleaning Filter Socks with Hydrogen Peroxide

Came across this thread on reefcentral today. Someone compared using bleach vs. hydrogen peroxide for cleaning FILTER SOCKS. Apparently hydrogen peroxide is far more environmentally friendly and potentially safer for your tank. Take a look...

    Doug's 180 Gallon Mixed Reef

Thanks guys its very helpful advice. I will watch the star polyps and make sure they stay on that one rock. The mushrooms...I will need to reconsider. They are only on the one rock at the moment so I can always remove that rock and be done with it. Erin: The output of the skimmer...

Thanks everyone! I guess I'll have to reconsider the star polyps. xcarat: I would love to take you up on your offer! So the "hitchhiker" is actually a candy hogfish.

    Doug's 180 Gallon Mixed Reef

Finally an update: Well A lot has happened. Tank has been up for two months now. Its actually never went through much a cycle because I bought my live rock from someone local and took it right out of their tank and into mine. Had the normal outbreak of green hair algae, which i removed...

    Doug's 180 Gallon Mixed Reef

I did some more work this weekend. Hooked up the top-off system from autotopoff.com. Hopefully I can maintain a relatively constant water level in the sump. That way I don't need to worry about having my return pump and protein skimmer in the same section of my sump. I wanted to keep them...

    Doug's 180 Gallon Mixed Reef

So I guess I'm going to be setting up a seperate tank for the refugium then. I'll put the protein skimmer in the middle compartment of the sump and the return pump in the far right. So I added salt to the tank and a few pieces of live rock. Looking on craigslist for more live rock. I...

    Doug's 180 Gallon Mixed Reef

I guess I will have to put the skimmer in the middle chamber and then the return pump in the far right chamber? I can always use another tank as the refugium and plumb it into the sump

    Doug's 180 Gallon Mixed Reef

tumbleweed: I should have explained it. The left side will be the water coming from tank. The middle will be a refugium. And the right side will be where the protein skimmer and return pump will sit. xcarat: I believe the GE silicone I or II will work. At least I know the GE Silicone II...

    Doug's 180 Gallon Mixed Reef

Well the tank is full of ro/di water now. Using a garbage can as my sump at the moment. I built a stand for my sump tank and started installing the baffles into the sump. Picked up some 1/4inch acrylic from TAP plastics in san mateo. Used the GE silicone II to attach them. Once thats dry I...

rygh: You're tank is so impressive! I'm just trying the boring, tried and true method. Im excited to see how yours turns out!

    Doug's 180 Gallon Mixed Reef

99sf: yes thats the next job. Im going to build a stand to raise up the sump tank a bit off the ground. Im also going to have the glass cut to put baffles into the sump. Then I can set up the protein skimmer and make an in-sump refugium.

    Doug's 180 Gallon Mixed Reef

thanks screebo that would be great! Ok here's an update and more pics. I got all the plumbing done (which meant yet two more trips to lowes!). As I said earlier, I used (2) 1" PVC lines going from tank to sump and (2) 3/4" flex PVC going from sump to tank. I hooked it all up, filled up the...

    Doug's 180 Gallon Mixed Reef

Thanks guys. I finished the hard plumbing to the sump yesterday and will plumb the return stuff tonight. i'll post some pics once its all done (presuming it works without leaking, of course). screebo: thanks for the encouraging words. Im sure I will branch out from softies once I get...

    Doug's 180 Gallon Mixed Reef

The tank finally arrived! I assembled the stand first, which was sort of challenging. It was made in china and came without instructions (because it was custom). I somehow figured out which pieces what went where and which screws went where. I then made the necessary holes to allow my...

    Rygh's 250 gallon upgrade

All your hard work will make it ever more rewarding once it's all done. I will definitely be watching to see how the turf scrubing works out in the long run. It's a great idea that I have heard bounced around for many years.

Hmmm I will do some research on an LED / T5 combo. Is there a good manufacturer that makes an affordable complete unit? Im not an electrician and wouldn't want to do a DIY lighting project! haha

    Doug's 180 Gallon Mixed Reef

Thanks guys I will definitely check out the threads. I've been reading a ton of them on here and on reefcentral. Do you think 5's and LEDs alone are sufficient to support SPS in the future? I do understand the longterm costs are better but the upfront costs are insane (especially for a...
