    DC pump good/bad?

Specifically looking at ordering a Jebao DCT-6000 to replace one of the mag pumps. Would appreciate any thoughts from those who've tried them. Also curious if there's any compelling reason to spend the extra $100 for the waveline.

    DC pump good/bad?

How are you guys liking these pumps? I've been suspicious for quite some time that my mag9.5s are outdated and that I could do better. Not to mention my skimmer pump dies about once a year and seizes completely to the housing. It looks like I could reduce power consumption and get better...

    Bulk additives (Alk, Cal, Mag)

Should be anhydrous calcium chloride from what I read. In any case, it works.

    Bulk additives (Alk, Cal, Mag)

I'm trying to figure out exactly which calcium chloride it is myself. It does get quite hot when I mix it, I have to shake the jug so it doesn't melt the bottom out. I do recall that it used to say "calcium chloride" on the buckets, but they redesigned them and now it's just "hardness plus."

    Bulk additives (Alk, Cal, Mag)

I have always considered the goal to be saturation. Once you reach the point where it precipitates out, i seem to get fairly consistent results from batch to batch. That's my thinking behind adding a bit more solids to each batch. Ime it's easier to deal with a saturated batch that wastes a...

    Bulk additives (Alk, Cal, Mag)

You know, I did a lot of reading when I started dosing this stuff, but I've forgotten exactly which recipe and what exact formula it is. I just know how to mix it and that it works. Fwiw I think this is helpful: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=784584 Take everything on...

    Bulk additives (Alk, Cal, Mag)

I buy mine from Leslie's pool supply. Calcium chloride (Hardness plus) Soda ash (labeled as is) It's cheaper, and comes in many sizes from a couple pounds to buckets. I mix per Randy's recipe, 2-3/4 cups or so per gallon. I go for mixing a bit heavier, and I decant only the clear liquids into...

    SPS STNing, any ideas?

I don't think John is suggesting them as a long term solution, and I know I'm not. If I am seeing tissue loss in my tank, screw stability I'm hitting the reset button. I use NSW not salt mix, and I view as close as I can get to a 100% water change as "getting back to the goal." Once you get...

    SPS STNing, any ideas?

This would be my immediate response as well. I've never found much value in chasing parameters in bad water, just take it out.

    Emergency, flooding, need parts asap.

Simply install in tank treadmills for your tangs, hooked up to a generator.

    Moving

For a tank your size, it's possible to move it with sand inside. I moved a 65g down two flights of stairs, but it was heavy with the sandbed in it. You need at least three guys who can lift 80# or so. Two guys carry, one guy floats to open doors and provide extra support and stability. If you...

    Kalkwasser

Also, I personally feel anything food grade or sold for human consumption will be safe for my tank. I've seen a few arguments over this, but for me it comes down to this: I know items meant for humans are tested for purity. Items sold for fish aren't. Just because an aquarium sales pitch claims...

    Vincent's 40g AIO

Nice tank, can't wait to see it aquascaped! Fwiw, you can remove scratches from glass, it's not that difficult but requires specialized sanding pads.

    Kalkwasser

Great writeup! Kalk is pretty amazing for how simple and cheap it is, but there is some risk involved. In small doses, the ph effect is also usually a good thing for most tanks, but can cause damage if it malfunctions. On every tank I've had for many years, ato is always 100% kalk, and I...
