    Chromis’s 90g Acropora tank

Just giving your build thread a bump. Maybe you will post updated pictures [emoji3]. I hope the tank is doing well!

    My new CaRx!

That looks sweet. I’m thinking about getting a Geo myself. What is your plan for a feed pump and regulator?

    Dave’s 230 Gallon Reef

I chose to try the newer H160 that is less powerful than the H380 (40 watts vs 90 watts). I hope it will perform well. Time will tell if I need to upgrade it or not. I have not seen much info on the H160 and unfortunately, it wasn’t available when BRS reviewed refugium lights. Sent from my...

    Dave’s 230 Gallon Reef

I agree. I love all the diversity that comes with the rock. I feel it “helps” with success...not that one can’t be successful without it.

    Dave’s 230 Gallon Reef

Before purchasing a new light, you might want to try dosing a little iron and see if that helps. Iron gets depleted quickly when running a refugium. It could be what is limiting your growth.

    Dave’s 230 Gallon Reef

Yes. I wanted more surface area, but also feel the openness of the media will allow a good pod population to live within it. Something I don’t think MarinePure is good for. I can easily move the box around to clean under it and should be able to blow any detritus out of it with a powerhead. I...

    Dave’s 230 Gallon Reef

As my rock cures in the display, my fuge is up and running. I have a ball of Chaeto, an elevated tray 4” deep with Reborn carx media and a Kessil H160 to light it. I am currently running the fuge light 14 hours a day at about 50%. I have been slowly raising the percentage so I don’t burn the...

    Dave’s 230 Gallon Reef

There was a pencil urchin that I put in my refugium and a crab that didn’t look Reef safe that I also put in the refugium. Other than that a couple of snails, macro algae, sponges and stuff. No mantis shrimp or other surprises yet.

    Dave’s 230 Gallon Reef

It has been a little while since I posted. I finished my plumbing, filled the tank and added live rock from KP Aquatics. They were great to work with. They collected the rock on a Sunday, shipped it on Tuesday and I had it Wednesday morning. It was very fresh. After collecting it, the rock was...

    Dave’s 230 Gallon Reef

A little progress. I got my drain lines plumbed. I still need to glue everything. They are just dry fitted right now.

    Substrate

I guess my main point is that even fine sand gets loaded with detritus. I wonder if coarse media would really have more. My thought on maintenance is that a shallow layer of coarse media can have the detritus blown out with a powerhead very easily on a regular basis suspending it in the water...

    Substrate

I have always been told not to use coarse sand because it is a detritus trap. I’m sure almost everyone has seen the display tanks at Neptune’s that have a deep layer of coarse carx media as substrate. Has anyone asked them why they do this and what maintenance they perform on it? Their display...

    Waterbox Peninsula 5526

Encouraging someone to join the club is great, but I’m not sure this is a friendly approach. Your tank looks very nice. I wish I had a spot for a large peninsula style tank. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Dave’s 230 Gallon Reef

I added moulding to the canopy and stained it. I still need to add a couple coats of finish. I also added an electric panel to the stand. My plumbing supplies will be here at the end of the week. Once plumbed I will do a water test. I also ordered a Life Reef Skimmer for the System.

    Dave’s 230 Gallon Reef

Without the canopy, the light was too distracting. I sanded the canopy today, plan to add moulding to the top to match the stand and it will be stained to match the stand as well. When finished, I think it will look good. Stay tuned...

    Dave’s 230 Gallon Reef

Just a quick update. I hung my light fixture and started building a canopy. The top of the canopy will be open to let hot air from the light fixture escape. It will also allow me to easily feed the fish from the top. The canopy is easily removed by sliding it forward. I have the same brand/color...

    Dave’s 230 Gallon Reef

Talking about lighting, my light fixture arrived yesterday. I’m going old school and will be rocking T5. It is an 8 bulb ATI SunPower fixture. These are proven to grow SPS. Down the road, I always have the option of adding a Reef Brite strip or a couple of Kessils for shimmer. I am still...

    Dave’s 230 Gallon Reef

That wire is just temporary. It runs power to my existing Nuvo 40. When the new tank is full, those wires will be gone. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Dave’s 230 Gallon Reef

With the help of some great friends and BAR suction cups that ashburn2k delivered, the tank is now in my house! We couldn’t have gotten the tank onto the stand without the suction cups. Now it’s time to start plumbing.

How are your Alk and Ca levels now? Are they steady? What are you keeping them at/aiming for? Thanks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
