    Seriatoporas gone south!

Thanks for the suggestion. Luckily, I'm in Santa Rosa, a chloramine free zone! My RO/DI output has been real steady a zero TDS. Even if there were chlorine getting past the filter I'd think it would off gas by the time I get around to using it. See lazy above.;) It is WC day today so I'll see...

    Seriatoporas gone south!

Thanks. Do you have any suspicions as to cause? I'm wondering if it got so big it killed flow and is sort of 'self pruning'. Am I being anthropomorphic if I ascribe plant actions to an animal? :) I did get a couple of good cuttings. Since I don't know the cause I'd hate to pass it on to...

    Seriatoporas gone south!

No changes made. What's puzzling me is this 'beginner' coral seems to be the only one in distress.

    Seriatoporas gone south!

In the last week 3 out of 4 bird's nest colonies have either died or are on their way to death. Today I pulled out the largest, a one foot by six inch sour apple bird's nest. There were some pieces that still looked they could be saved so I fragged them, dipped them in Revive and returned them...

Hornberson Reef - DSA 90 gallon mixed reef

Bummer! It sucks when we try to do good and are derailed by something so simple as a salty refractometer! Thank you for posting. I have a couple of suggestions if you don't mind... How about smaller water changes? Any error in salt mix wouldn't be as drastic a change on the system. The other...

    Rygh's 250 gallon - rev.2

If you keep the acid solution acid enough to do any good won't you just dissolve the rock? I got some small rocks I can sell you real cheap. Save you the time dissolving. :) How about a soak in lanthanum chloride then some rinsing?

Hornberson Reef - DSA 90 gallon mixed reef

Sweet tank. Is the front glass concave? Sort of anti-bowfront? ;) Love your food ring. I've been using a floating ring that sorta suctions to the side. I've gotta steal that idea!

    Vegan Kole Tang?

My Kole was extremely shy in QT. He would eat, but not if I was in the room. I even set up a video camera to film him eating so I could assure myself he was actually eating! When he got to the DT, it was like a switch was flipped. Now he's out all the time, eats everything and is a real PIA as...

What test kits does a newbie need?

I use Salifert and like them. As to the actual tests, Ca, Alk, Mg, Nitrate, Phosphate (Hanna) are my go to, regular tests. pH is handled by my controller and a probe. I hate the test kit pH tests! As you are starting up a tank I'd have ammonia and possibly Nitrite. The problem being a frugal...

    Felicia's 40B Predator Reef

My biggest concern with your sump design is the size of the return section. I made mine too small. The problem is if the ATO goes wonky the return pump will suck air in almost no time. I'd remove the ATO res from the sump, give more room for the refug and return plus make it easier to add water...

That's exactly the first thought I had reading Mark's post! Except I think it's 'tinkle' - the other would hurt! :(

    Folks we need to act

Somewhat off topic... FaceBook was down a few days ago. There were quite a few calls to '911' services because of the 'emergency'. Just another indication that we, as a society, are DOOMED! :D Live long and prosper. V (best Vulcan salute I can do with text)

    Folks we need to act

I though they might be connected. But I knew the acronym! Doesn't it look so much more impressive with lots of acronyms? :D :D :D

    Folks we need to act

The coral list has been shortened. The big issue is the species are not easily distinguished. Regulators have historically taken the 'if it quacks like a duck, it's a duck' approach. This is predicted to severely restrict all similar corals. The ESA was proposed by Richard Nixon and passed...

    Folks we need to act

I'm confused. Do you think the proposed inclusion of these corals in the endangered species list is NOT a problem for U.S. ornamental aquatics? That view seems to be in direct opposition to the linked vid.

DRY ROCK & LIVE ROCK Discussion

I thought that was the case. Just posting to make sure some N00B didn't read that and take it for gospel. As you are aware, everything on the internet is true! ;) ;)
