DRY ROCK & LIVE ROCK Discussion

Mike are you talking about a BB tank or one with substrate?

DRY ROCK & LIVE ROCK Discussion

The big risk is not all ammonia is just ammonia! Lots of cleaning products have surfactants (like detergents) and you DON'T want that in the tank! I'm always very cautious about adding anything not made for the aquarium. BTW you don't need much to start the cycle. You want to shoot for 1-2ppm...

Yep. I'd give a thumbs up to both the One and Only and the ammonia. I believe there is pure ammonia available as a cleaning product. Google it!

External overflow box / opening dimensions advice needed!

I really love my external OF. It's so nice not having to deal with a box inside the tank. If you haven't seen this it might give you some ideas: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2462867

DRY ROCK & LIVE ROCK Discussion

I did my tank with a mix of BRS reef saver and Pukani. I like the Pukani much better. Much lighter so for a given size you need less and that evens out the cost. In hindsight I'd take my time and either do a Muriatic acid bath or out of tank cook/soak to get rid of the 'stuff' that was on the...

Petco $1/gallon sale - looking for 40 breeder

Not to hijack Felicia's wonderful thread - great job BTW - but just what skimmers are not sensitive to water level? I'd guess external skimmers are in that category, but what else? My solution is a controller. Any time my return pump is not powered, the skimmer automatically shuts down. If...

    New In-Wall Tank

Turnover is a hot topic. I've read you MUST have anywhere between 3x to 15x! Talking about it is likely to start a battle (Nikon vs Canon, Mac vs PC, etc) :( I'm not sure you could get 1500+gph with a Durso. That might be quite loud. With one OF and two holes I'd go with a Herbie (one full...

    Carbon & Phosphates?

It's pretty darn small. You'll need sponges to hold it in and keep it packed tight. You don't want carbon to tumble. I think the whole phosphate in carbon thing is from cheap, not necessarily for aquariums, carbon. I've been using the ROX 0.8 (catchy name, BTW) for a couple of years with no issues.

    mangetic frag rack opinions

I have a frag-a-rack. Love it. Made by a guy in Santa Rosa. Unfortunately he is having problems sourcing magnets and therefore has none in stock. If you can find one used, go for it!

    Anh's 125g Peninsula Tank

I had quite a bit of bryopsis till I added a one spot Foxface and a Kole Tang. In no time at all it was all gone! I much prefer a biological solution if at all possible. I really don't like the magic bottles of 'stuff' with no ingredients listed! :(

Lawrence's first (90g) salt water tank

Almost 14 months between posts. Tank still dry. Well you have the first requirement of a reef keeper - patience! :D

    Temp drops

I could see that as a problem. I use the Eheim-Jäger heaters. Hoping their t-stat is old school.

    Temp drops

Pretty much the same setup here. I have had my Apex go nuts (only when I'm out of town!) but with the heaters set just slightly higher that my usual max, beasties just got a little tropical vacation! :) Since the heater's t-stat never goes thru the on-off cycle and arcing, I'm hoping the...

    Temp drops

Sometimes. Unless UPS looses it! ;) If you do pay for it you will most likely get 'it' but is 'it' worth it? How long have you used these? I'm not trying to be argumentative, just getting some data and being skeptical. :D I think the hardest thing for a consumer is determining if the price...

    Return to Reefing

Science classroom! Fantastic!! Do you need any equipment or livestock? I'd be happy to donate. I'm sure other members would too. Be sure to start a tank build journal.

    Yellow Wrasse QT

How about adding a container of sand? W/O sand the wrasse is stressed. If you put the unQT'd wrasse in the DT, the DT might get stressed with something the wrasse brings in.

Anyone know where to get these clean up crew critters locally?

I need to update this comment. Needing a resupply of my CUC and finding no viable alternative to ReefCleaners, I ordered from them again. Got the quick crew package. This turned out great. So different from my last order. Packaging was great, included a heat pack. Small bags were all placed in a...
