Maybe just run one drain in there? Change your plumbing so you have a main drain that uses a siphon and that goes into the roller mat?

Red Sea one is hang on. They seem to work well, I prefer over filter socks for sure. Not sure the overall impact of any besides maybe clearer water/less coral food in the water column

You are chasing your tail. Phosphate likely not your problem. Wouldn’t kill a fish. Maybe grinding up the media might not be good tho

I think you need lighting on the sides not just above the tank
