    Zero nitrates with phosphates

Could it be that the hair algae in your tank is feeding on nitrates? AFAK, the bacteria that detoxifies nitrates needs some traces of phosphates. And the other way around. If you are aggressively using GFO, that would trap the phosphates, then the bacteria will starve and the nitrates will be...

RO auto shut off valve keeps cycling on and off

If the valve shuts off the water and then it starts again, it could be that three is a small leak in the clean water circuit. The leak makes the pressure drop, then the valve opens to refill the clean water, the pressure goes up, the valve closes, and the cycle repeats.

New to BAR, and my science experiment

Jim, I fought with the hair algae for about 2 years in the past. I have tried various herbivores from snails & crabs to fish & sea hares. I tried various chemicals. I tried periods of lights off, elevated magnesium, you name it! They either didn't make a difference, had directly a negative...

    Hello everyone

Welcome to BAR. Your tanks look cool & neat. I'm looking forward to the Raspberry Pi controller dedicated thread.

    Ich

Yes, from what I read and seen, I believe the same. Some fish could get temporarily resistance to ich, escaping an outbreak. But, they don't get full immunity, they could even still host the ich in small amounts. Then, when they get a bit stressed their defense is broken and the ich...

Going back to Metal Halides from LEDs

With the risk of derailing the thread, I will say that I also had issues with my reefkeeper in regards to heaters. I set my controller to power off the outlet if the temp reaches 80F and I set the heaters to maintain a temp of 77F. Well, the heaters kept burning out. I burned a couple Finnex...

So I really screwed something up last night

IMO, 9 fish with only one tang is not that much for a reef tank. The amount of food you used sounds a bit more. How long did the fish take to consume that food? I stayed away from frozen food after reading that it is prone to pollute the water with nutrients. I don't know 100% if it is true and...

Going back to Metal Halides from LEDs

I'm also running LEDs on a 180G, 6ft long x 2ft wide tank. I use 3 Ocean Revive T247 lamps. Each is running at 35% blue and 20% white. I'm getting pretty good grow on SPS, their colors looks good too. I expect that more advanced LEDs would give you even better growth. As @Flagg37 said...

So I really screwed something up last night

Sorry to hear about what happened to your fish. I also suspect that it was something toxic that caused the rapid reaction. Maybe something on the brush, maybe some toxins released from algae, corals or rocks because of scrubbing. Although the hair algae could be a tough beast to deal with, I...

PG&E really doesn't want anyone to keep reef tanks.

Yes, SunPower have the most efficient panels. Although, make some price calculations to see if they are really worth it - if you have the space it might be more cost effective to add more panels than buying a smaller number of the SunPower panels for same total output. In my case, the roof...

    Fun times in the fuge

Although I saw these little guys in my tank & refugium for over a year now, it surprised me tonight to see a huge party under the chaeto. I like to watch them swimming around, hope you will too.

How do most of you guys battle cyanobacteria and other algae

Yes, I had the same light for a while on the second setup. It was a fluorescent bulb from HD. Then i changed the light bulb thinking that it got old. Still no growth, so I changed it with a different type. afterwards my hair algae problems got worse, then chaeto slowly died being out powered...

How do most of you guys battle cyanobacteria and other algae

I started growing chaeto in a sump_refugium in which the drain was pouring straight into the refugium section. So entire flow from the return pump was through the chaeto. I had good growth, no algae in the tank, all was good. Later on when I upgraded my DT, I also changed the sump. That sump...

How do most of you guys battle cyanobacteria and other algae

I haven't run into Cyano problems. I battled hair algae for almost 2 years in the past. what worked for me was: - keep the livestock stable. Adding new fish or crabs & snails was a risk for me. New fish meant more food and more waste and some don't acclimate, then specially snails were hard to...

    Nuked from orbit...

I'm curious how you effort to remove them will progress since I'm battling a similar situation, which hopefully for now seems contained to my QT and not the main tank. After being burned by ich & flatworms a few times, I finally got paranoid and now I am QT-ing everything. A few months back I...
