    Algae control

I battled HA for 2 years or so. What worked in the end for me was: - controlled nutrients: reduced feedings, livestock & favor herbivores, stopped adding new CUC, specially snails appeared to die often causing more nutrients, did aggressive skimming, made sure RODI water is pure - used some...

    Help me design my tank!

You've already got 2 of my big "regrets": the coast to coast overflow with the external overflow box + wide tank. My tank has a partial back wall overflow + an external overflow box with Bean Animal style drain. I wish I would have gone with a coast to coast overflow for better surface drain &...

New Reef Octopus 150 vs modified/used Euro Reef CS8-2 vs ?

I had a cs8-2 skimmer on my 125G for a while. It was way overkill, and, yes, I feel that it would have worked better with a bigger pump. I switched to a reef octopus 150. I am happy with it, much better skimmate amount, less noise, smaller footprint.

    Leemar Starphire 290

Kris, it made me sad to hear about your tank troubles. FWIW, your tank still looks great. It's hard to imagine that all those coral skeletons came out of your tank. I hope the corals will grow back fast. & congrats on passing probation. That's huge!

    How big is too big!?!

I started the hobby with a 29G & no sump, then I added a 20G sump. Next I upgraded to a 50G + 20G sump. After that I upgraded again to a 135G + 40G sump. My main reason for upgrade from 50G to 135G was to be able to keep a couple tangs that I really liked at that time. Having a bigger tank...

All work and no play makes Jack...

Wow, lots of good information here. I will definitely "steal" some ideas. From my side, the big steps in easing the maintenance were: - adding a sump with a good skimmer, macro algae refugium & sand bed. They got rid of nitrates in short time, while before I had to do often water changes to...

@humu, sorry to hear about your experience.

    Yay! 3 weeks alone...

Yeah. It helps have knowledgeable friends close by. Although, I won't dare to ask any friend to stop by my house more than once-twice a week. So I rely on automation, monitoring, spare parts & lots of luck. Beside the burn-out heater, the one piece of equipment that "misbehaved" during the 3...

    Yay! 3 weeks alone...

I was out of country, in Europe, for 3 weeks over the holiday break. to make things worse, before this trip I had very little time, so I prepared the tank for my absence in a super rush. I got lucky and most of the equipment ran fine. The corals & fish did great. not only that I didn't loose...

question about light for reef tank

How big is the tank, dimensions and gallons, and what kind of light fixture do you have? The general rule is that for corals you would need 3-5W of light power per gallon. It depends on multiple factors such as the type of corals & depth of tank. If you go with T5 you'll need both...

    Float switch failure

Yes, that might work. Thanks. I would need to buy at least one more adapter for RK. The one I have right now only supports 2 switches.

    Float switch failure

Thanks, guys. I haven't properly used the terms open & close in my post above. My switches are in the open circuit position when the water is topped off. So when the water goes down the switch actually closes the circuit to activate the pump. Which means the pump won't start if a wire gets cut...

    Float switch failure

For a few years, my ATO system consists of 2 float switches hooked to ReefKeeper that controls a small pump. I have the float switches on a vertical bracket with one being active and the other one being the emergency shut off. They are connected in parallel to the same port on RK, the...

Anyone have an Asterina Starfish problem?

@Vincerama2 you are right, I also used the hyposalinity treatment against ich successfully in the past. Yes, I had to catch all fish, including the ones that show no ich signs and move them to a QT. There are various ways to setup the QTs, most recommend not to use rocks & sand. AFAK, that is...

    Guilty confessions

I used to not QT any new livestock. I got lucky for the first couple years - fish were healthy, no algae. Then I ran through 2 bad ich outbreaks, one round of flatworms, almost 2 years of HA blooms & a bunch of losses to convince myself that QT rules both time & cost wise. I'm still cutting...

    Coral keeping cheat sheet

Haha, that first table threw me off too. Then I realized it's just a "legend" for the list below it. Pretty bad choice on presentation. The info on the list looks cool though. Thanks @nly04 for posting it.
