Anyone know if a purple urchin from the Cali coast can survive in tropical water temps?

I'm planning on getting my rescue diver certification in about a month, and I was thinking that I'd like to take something from the local coastline while diving for my tank. I recently got a pencil urchin to help mow down some algae and it is clearly the best member of my CUC so far. So I want...

Pests under microscope... what are these things?!

Nice recording. It would help me take a more educated guess about what these might be if I knew the magnification level. How much water flow is passing over the areas you're filming? It is possible that a lot of the movement is just from water movement. However, all dinoflagellates have 2...

First Time Snorkeling on a Wild Reef

You absolutely do! I can't imagine being in Kona for 2 weeks and never swimming among the fish and corals! Being a reefer and not being able to swim on a real reef is like being a rock climber and never getting out of the gym; you miss out on first-hand experience of the very environment that...

First Time Snorkeling on a Wild Reef

Although Hawaii isn't known for its coral, and its reefs certainly have comparatively little coral diversity compared with reefs in the coral triangle, if you know where to look you can find very healthy looking reefs. I've mostly been to the Big Island (Hawai'i Island), so that's what I'll...

Anyone try a diy frozen feeder?

As far as stirring a liquid food to keep it from settling, that can be done easily with a magnetic stirrer and stir bar: http://www.amazon.com/Hanna-Instruments-Magnetic-Mini-Stirrer-Speedsafe/dp/B002OSX2Q0/ref=lp_318023011_1_4?s=industrial&ie=UTF8&qid=1452217177&sr=1-4 These can be had used on...

    DBTC: Phytoplankton and Rotifers

It probably is a better fit for a different thread, but I grew Nannochloropsis for a while in college just to see what effect it would have on my tank. All you need to grow them is freshly mixed saltwater and a little bit of miracle gro fertilizer. I grew Nanno in a clean 1 liter soda bottle...

    DBTC: Phytoplankton and Rotifers

It's very nice of you to do a DBTC with this stuff! I don't need it, but I thought I would just let everyone know that a colleague of mine at UC Berkeley studies Nannochloropsis, so if anyone wants a little Nanno in Berkeley I'm sure I could get you some. Also, my colleague stores his...

    Montipora Eating Nudibranchs

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I'm using bayer insecticide as my dip, and I use a little disposable pipette to blow off the montis while they're in the dip. It seems to kill the nudis, and others online say it kills them as well. But like other dips, it doesn't harm their eggs, so I am...

    Montipora Eating Nudibranchs

Well, I have begun another rite of passage in the reefing community. I've now dealt with Acropora eating flatworms and Montipora eating nudibranchs in my current tank. The AEFWs were eradicated months ago. But just this morning, right as the lights turned on, I noticed these little f@*!ers on...

Largest Single Celled Organism in the World

Not yet. They reproduce via spores that are released from around the periphery of the cap. I bet I'll find more eventually, but they have a reputation of appearing, dissappearing, and reappearing later. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using Tapatalk

    Testing, East bay LFS?

Have you tried the red sea pro magnesium test kit and the Hanna HI 713 phosphate checker? Those have worked well for me so far. I'm not sure how accurate the magnesium test kit really is, but I have tested the Hanna phosphate checker against a standard I made and it was pretty close (within...

Feeding My Frog Fish Frozen Food

So I guess that if you go out of town for a week, you can just toss a couple feeder shrimp into the tank and he will hunt on his own? If so, that's awesome. Easiest fish in the world the feed while on vacation! lol Now you're making me want to get one :-) Will they eat small fish in your...

Feeding My Frog Fish Frozen Food

So cool :-) But will you always have to feed the frogfish like this? And how often does it need to eat? I could see this becoming a real nuisance in the long run. Plus, can you imagine getting a tank sitter to do this properly while you're out of town? I'd definitely worry about it.

    Carpools for the swap

I'll be driving down from North Oakland / Berkeley if anyone wants to ride with me. I'd like to get there around noon, but could be convinced to go earlier. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using Tapatalk

    Reef Angel

I have an RA and love it. I don't have a lot of programming knowledge, but it really is pretty easy even if you want to write your own functions. I'd be glad to help anyone who's having trouble. Of course it sounds like Seaslugteam won't have any problems I can help with...

Largest Single Celled Organism in the World

I was looking at my tank a few nights ago, and I noticed a small green mushroom-like thing growing on the back of one of my snails. I realized it was an Acetabularia! Acetabularia is a genus of single-celled, eukaryotic, green algae. This means that although they are unicellular, they are...

    DBTC: Red Dragon

I used 5 mL Bayer advanced insect killer complete per cup of tank water and dip for 5-10 minutes. However, a few days after the red dragon RTNed, the other SPS in my quarantine tank also started looking badly. I wonder now if temperature swings and/or non-optimal alkalinity levels are really...

    DBTC: Red Dragon

Well, sadly my frag RTNed while I was at work yesterday... I'm not sure why because other corals are doing fine, but some reefcentral threads suggest that red dragon is very sensitive to dips, even Bayer, which I use. Be extra careful with your frags of this! Sorry to everyone that I lost it :-(

[Sep 12, 2015] Regional Frag Swap (Hayward, CA (Building 2300 Cafeteria - Parking Lot B12))

I'm pre-registered :-) Frag swaps are always fun! Who doesn't like getting new corals and meeting fellow reef nuts :D
