Reminder to All: Acropora Eating Flatworms!

You certainly make the LFS not QTing issue sound hopeless aqua-nut! Maybe you're right. I guess it makes no difference either way, since it will always be necessary to do your own QT if you want to be sure not to introduce diseases and pests into your own aquarium...

Reminder to All: Acropora Eating Flatworms!

I could hold a few frags, but it is possible that my QT still has AEFWs in it... Should be safe for softies and LPS though.

Reminder to All: Acropora Eating Flatworms!

Dipping frequently and dipping corals already in your tank makes good sense for a store that is constantly adding new stock, but I'd think that doing that to apparently healthy colonies in a personal tank would slow down their growth. Plus it isn't really possible to break off an encrusted...

External overflow box / opening dimensions advice needed!

I did on the first try, but not while cutting the slit. I broke the back pane when I was drilling a normal hole to plumb my refugium to the DT :-(

Reminder to All: Acropora Eating Flatworms!

Yikes Nav! I hope you're lucky and really did get all of them before the frags went in your DT. I somehow doubt that a coral with 5 of those bad boys on it didn't have any eggs. Hopefully the eggs were on the base of the coral or frag plug that you removed. Nice macro shot of our mortal enemies!

Reminder to All: Acropora Eating Flatworms!

For the record, the guys at Diablo did say they dip all new arrivals. I guess they don't have proper QT for corals at least. I think they thought they got all the pests like AEFWs. I don't think they were intentionally not treating their corals and spreading pests to their customers. I got the...

Reminder to All: Acropora Eating Flatworms!

Update: I called diablo and they reacted positively. They said they've been getting in new maricultured pieces in preparation for their frag swap and have been hoping to avoid these kind of pests. They asked me which tanks the infested frags were from and said they would redip everything and try...

Reminder to All: Acropora Eating Flatworms!

I just had my first experience with Acropora eating flatworms (AEFW) this evening. They came in on frags from Diablo Corals. I don't mean to bash Diablo at all. In fact, I will call them tomorrow to tell them they have these in their tanks, just in case they don't already know. It seems that...

DRY ROCK & LIVE ROCK Discussion

I did an HCl wash on my Marco rocks and they haven't leached any detectable phosphate. However, I have read of people just rinsing them in tap water and having no issues. The rock does have a little dirt in the hard to clean pores, so cleaning that out is a must.

External overflow box / opening dimensions advice needed!

I cut a 1" x 11" slit in the side of my 75 gallon glass tank. I planned on using a diamond dremmel bit, but that was taking so long I came up with another technique. Draw out the slit you want on the glass. Then use a diamond hole saw the same diameter as the width of the slit you want cut and...

Advice on Storing Rock for next time

If they aren't too big and your tank had no aiptasia, majanos, flatworms, nudibranchs, or red bugs, I could toss them in my tank. I've been looking for more rock anyway and if they're covered in coralline, some of it will probably grow onto my rocks as well :-) you could get it back from me...

    Pipe Organ

I am interested as well. My tank is SPS focused, so it will be nice to add a little movement in the lower flow spots.

Don't get too excited: Capnella, Xenia

I live in Oakland as well and I'd love some xenia for my refugium! My girlfriend and friends will also appreciate something that doesn't just look like "sticks", lol :-) I can pick up the xenia from you whenever. Let me know! Thanks, Gabe

How much kalkwasser can a tank take?

To answer your original question, I do not think that adding vinegar to your kalkwasser is decreasing the pH significantly. If my calculations are even ballpark correct, you aren't doing much to limit the pH increasing effects of kalkwasser dosing by adding vinegar. Rather, you're just jacking...

How much kalkwasser can a tank take?

Slight correction to my above calculation: although the acetate- adds alkalinity to the tank, it also neutralized an equivalent amount of OH- which would have added even more alkalinity to your tank. So on second thought, unless you add more CaOH to the solution afterwards, adding vinegar...

How much kalkwasser can a tank take?

Ok, I'm going to attempt to actually do the math here. I need a refresher on my acid-base chemistry anyway, so take my calculations with a grain of salt :p Starting with saturated CaOH = 1.73 g/L at 20 celcius (from wikipedia). 1.73 g CaOH/L * 1 mole CaOH/74.093 g CaOH = 0.023 moles CaOH/L. 1...

:) Thanks Ender! In that case, I'll bring what I can and definitely join in! I need to meet more reef people anyway :D

[Mar 14, 2015] Members Frag Swap and General Membership Meeting (Hayward, CA)

As a newbie to reefing in the Bay, I don't really have much I can frag yet. If I only bring one or two frags, can I be included in the last round or something? Alternatively, is there any way that I can come to the frag swap and buy some of the leftovers? I'd like to participate in some way...

NOOB Needing Help: Drilling 40Br Overflow/20L sump

I guess it all depends upon where you're moving. I tore down a tank I really like before moving from Texas to California. It's not at all easy to move tanks, even tiny ones, very far. Now if you're moving down the street, you might be able to do it with much effort and some damage/loss of life...

NOOB Needing Help: Drilling 40Br Overflow/20L sump

If you think you'll be moving in a year, don't bother with a reef tank. Things take a long time to get settled in and grow out. You'll be happier if you save your money and set up a reef in yor new place in a year.
