    Richie's 48x24x12 frag tank

I wish I could get a perfect picture of this tank right now. My acros and other sps are growing into such large colonies that I'm starting to run out of space! At some point I'll start fragging these, and also at some point I'll start transferring them to my display (after I get it setup again)...

Any floor protection under a tank?

Updated thought if I do this, I'd probably instead either buy tiles, or just keep some offcuts of the planks we have. Tile would be hard and help spread load. LVP would help avoid there being indentations from the stand feet and to a very minor load spread. Both would be waterproof.

Any floor protection under a tank?

Red Sea Reefer 500. We just got new LVP flooring installed. The subfloor turned out to be wood planks (that part of the house is probably from 1950). Installer suggested before putting the stand back in place I put something under the feet to help with support, such as some plywood. The tank is...

    Hello fellow reefers

I wouldn't consider this conclusive, but during the short stint I quarantined things myself I researched copper and surfaces. My findings were that copper permanently damning anything it ever touches in a tank to be a leaching source seemed like another reefing old wives tale. Didn't seem to...

Reefability App - Feedback & First Hand Experience

100%. Feeding questions and data to ChatGPT or Llama (hosted via meta.ai or one of the self-hosted variations running the open source model) or DeepSeek does give useful answers to reefing questions, and almost certainly are what anything like this is actually built on. $60 a year for that is...

    Berghia success (despite wrasse)

I want to quick share a positive story. I had a bunch of issues with aiptasia having made it into my frag tank. I think it came from a clam bought from a LFS and I didn't aggressively enough handle it. I saw them occasionally, but was mostly under control. I then had an issue where a pump went...

Replacing Macro Algae with Corals in the Sump?

I wouldn't put something on the emergency, but putting a 45° or a 90° on the main doesn't seem completely crazy. However, sumps are so small that I would instead just buy a super cheap directional powerhead if you really needed additional flow. Those can be found for probably <= $20 used (or...

Death Autopsy - Any idea how to save the remaining fish?

I advocate for HTA, but also acknowledge errors or issues can happen. However, I know in the past I've had instances where I've seen issues with fish that were probably be just thinking there's issues with fish. Clowns are weird, so there's always a chance that when you look with a concerned eye...

    Operation goby

Would it overflow if the weir was completely plugged? I'm assuming that AIO has a specific return area with a smaller amount of water in it (that's how my AIOs have been). My logic being if you can prove to yourself it wouldn't overflow even if the weir was plugged, then you should feel safe to...

Death Autopsy - Any idea how to save the remaining fish?

To confirm my understanding, is the firefish also still alive?

    Operation goby

Plug your drain pipes. Let your pump run into the return section is totally empty and out is blowing bubbles. Does the tank overflow? If not, then you don't really have to worry about it overflowing, as long as your ATO auto deactivates if it runs too long or the display height gets too high.

Replacing Macro Algae with Corals in the Sump?

I had Xenia in my sump. Main downside relative to macros is it's very easy to toss out macros. It's a pita to toss out Xenia off rocks. Looks cool though. I had no issue with it traveling into the tank.

    Where to start with Hydros

Are they Wi-Fi devices that connect to your home network, or they connect to each other?

Can I move an aquarium, on stand, via dollies?

I currently have it in a bucket with some saltwater. I'll likely continue to procrastinate on it long enough that it all dies off, and I throw it in the garbage and start over. Barring that, I'll use that same type of mesh bag I'm using for the refugium and give it a long rinse with a hose...

    Trough ATO

On a completely AIO, no overflow section, aquarium, how do people handle ATO? I've realized I've never done a saltwater tank this setup. Even my first one back around 2005 had an overflow and sump. I have a giant 150 gallon trough my stuff is in right now. I'm planning on just putting the ATO...

Can I move an aquarium, on stand, via dollies?

IT HAPPENED! VINDICATION! Fellow keepers of stuff, you can use the following in discussions with your partners. I have some metal shelving in my garage, which is the exact same footprint as my aquarium. However, the top rung is approximately 2in too low and I also wanted a bit of buffer. I...

    Where to start with Hydros

Be very careful with heaters and the ecoflow devices. I've almost killed my tank 3 times doing that. Twice last week. The issue is the ecoflows have a max output restriction. If you shoot past it, the entire AC output turns off and doesn't reactivate until you manually turn it back on. What...

Can I move an aquarium, on stand, via dollies?

Honestly that's been on my mind the whole time. I just don't think I can pull off how much it'd cost. I also was considering getting the floor supports added while the floor could be cut open, but I don't think I can do it in time. Tbh the other thought once I got it empty has been "do I...

Can I move an aquarium, on stand, via dollies?

Thanks all. I'm set. I've got the holding trough setup with the first light over it and skimmer and gyre and a billion heaters while I get it to temperature. In getting this far, I've realized the huge PITA is not going to be moving the tank, it's going to be tearing things down and getting...

Can I move an aquarium, on stand, via dollies?

Plan of record is drain everything, pull fish and rocks, put all into a trough or containers. Add bubbler and heaters. Drain sump. At that point I'll see how heavy it is and if I can get the dollies under while holding it steady with suction cups. If not, I'll pull the sump out and see if I...
