    Alex’s IM 150 EXT

If my PH drops to 7.5 when the three of us (we left one child back in Germany :)..) come back and keep all windows open so that CO2 stays around 490 ppm, then I have a bigger problem. So yes I am inclined to think there is another reason for the drop than slightly elevated ambient CO2 levels...

    Alex’s IM 150 EXT

No, that did not bring the PH down to 7.5, and the ORP up by 100mv. CO2 ppm was and still is around 490, PH went back up to 8.2.

    Alex’s IM 150 EXT

A great point - I thought about this more this morning actually, since the other candy canes killed a large favia colony in my nano tank :(. The short answer is no, they both seem to be getting along very well for quite some time now. Also, yes, I wanted to trim the monti but both of them love...

    Alex’s IM 150 EXT

Thank you, Patrick. Only Day 1 after my return so I have not tried out the Tunze yet, but planning to do it ASAP. The only logistical issue with this is that both vertically oriented gyres I am using are sleeping places for a couple of fishes, so I feel bad removing one of them for now and...

    Alex’s IM 150 EXT

Good to know. I would have not bought them from the pictures though, based on my experience with other models. But trying them in store convinced me to give them a try. Let’s see how long they last. The Tunze is still the bench mark but not always precise enough to catch smaller items easily.

    Alex’s IM 150 EXT

I bought some items in Germany that I could not easily find here (plus the Tunze Stream 3, as per a separate post). 1. These seemed to have a very strong grip which is why I bought them for both the IM 150 and the Reefer Nano tank. Tried them out today and I am very happy with them - almost...

Video taken today (no filters, lots of glaring)) - only cleaned the glass, no water change yet.

    Alex’s IM 150 EXT

I am in camp 'lower nutrients' so will not make a case here for higher nutrients but I could definitelty see the growth in some, specifically the JF homewrecker, and the torches/hammers like it. The manila spy seems to have grown most, but this coral seems to grow faster than a birdsnest...

    Alex’s IM 150 EXT

Yes, and the tank sitter ended up refilling 5 gallons, so I assume my salinity slightly increased, but have not measured yet.

    Alex’s IM 150 EXT

Yes, agree with your concern. I had a 5 litre container before but had an issue recently when this overflowed, so I wanted to be safe while I was gone. While I think salinity is very important, my focus is on the skimmer. Turning it off for several days or a week is not something I wanted to...

    Alex’s IM 150 EXT

I returned last night after 16 days of vacation, and I could not find any problems with this tank (there were a couple of coral casualties in the nano tank, though). The neighbor's kid did a great job with the feeding and helping with adjusting the skimmer - an important lesson learned for next...

    Sulfamic acid to clean pumps?

I think this post was a bit misunderstood or drifted in a different direction. The bottom line message is that using specifically vinegar but also citric or muratic acid as often recommended is not a great idea for pumps, various types of plastic, but also rubber-based materials such as...

    Sulfamic acid to clean pumps?

I assume you are referring to the flow directors? These do not seem to help for two of the four gyres I am using them with (12 weeks cleaning cycle).

    2025 + 2024 Trip to Germany - Reefing

DELTEC is much more popular, and there are more options for ozone (many use both UV + Ozone). Reef Octopus seems to be non-existent in Germany, and I have not seen Hydros. Red Sea (a non-German brand) is pushing very hard in major retailers but gets very bad feedback when discussed in...

    2025 + 2024 Trip to Germany - Reefing

Here's another video from my visit to the Karlsruhe/Germany Vivarium this week. It recently added a second shark (after the other died, I believe, due to an accident). I am not sure if I have shared this video already, but I found this quite exciting when they added the second shark, and the...

    2025 + 2024 Trip to Germany - Reefing

Based on last year’s experience, I have focused on finding more literature, but the one I really wanted to find was about to get another update, and only releases in August - which is a brand new edition of the Fossa/Nielson The Modern Reef Aquarium. they are about to re-release Volume 1 after...

    Sulfamic acid to clean pumps?

I thought you do not clean your pumps. Not using any acid is preferred of course. I would not be able to do this, and I am mainly concerned about the gyres which are covered in deep corralline after 12 weeks. The return pumps or skimmer pumps should be fine with normal water, although I believe...

    Sulfamic acid to clean pumps?

Co-founder of Abyzz talks about not using common cleaning acids to clean (certain) parts of (their) pumps, based on their testing. It sounded though as he does generally NOT recommend to use the common knowledge cleaning acids such as vinegar, citric acid, and myratic acid. I have already...
