Sulfur denitrators have been around for a long time. There are so many ways of reducing nitrates such as algae scrubbers, macro algae, deep sand beds, carbon dosing, bio pellets, etc. The key is finding what works best for you.
That would be course aragonite media used in calcium reactors. The sulfur will bring down the ph, but placing the aragonite media on top helps buffer it.
I've dosed carbon (vodka/vinegar) for a while now with varied success to keep nitrates in check. Based on some friends in the hobby recommendations, I thought I'd try a H&S sulfur denitrator to help control nitrates. I'm starting off at a drip per second and will adjust accordingly. I'll report...
+1 on oversized sump. I converted a 125 tank into a massive sump I designed for a 250 gal reef. It has (from left to right) a return section, huge skimmer section, fuge, & a fresh water section hooked up to ato.
Hey John,
Sorry for the late reply.
As you may know socks need to be rotated frequently and can be a nitrate factory if not. The vortex filter is great for polishing the water when needed. It can also filter out much smaller particles than filter socks. My friend Lance Ichinotsubo uses them on...
I can make quite a few frags of this pink and lavender cespitularia I got from Shu Tin. It's easy to keep and does well with a well lit tank and good flow.
I dose LC (SeaKlear brand). 5ml in a 1 gal jug over a period of a few days. It has kept phosphates at 0.25 or less. As mentioned above be careful because it is potent stuff. I have 4 zebrasomas, many other tangs, and two angels with no I'll effects.
