Sump Design using Biopellets - Should i include a refugium

I think cryptic with sponges will do more than cheato. Sponges are very good at removing DOC and do very well in a system with biopellets. http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/11/13/sea-sponges-soak-up-carbon-like-a-sponge/

Water changes - how large and how often?

I let my water sit still for 5 days between water changes, no heating either, starting the heater and mixing pump 24hours prior to the water change to let pH and DO equalize. Whats it matter if the water is not being mixed when not in use, seems like a waste of electricity? as to the OP, I...

    Best Heater?

I had the RKE initially and it could not hold a stable temp. The temp probe was not accurate, it would report the temp as 78 when it was actually 70 and the chiller would still be running. All around it was buggy and unstable. I also didn't like that each component had to be updated separately...

    Hello everyone

Nice tank. I hope those rocks are glued/epoxied together, look a little precarious. You should start a tank journal, post pics of the sump too.

    Food & Nitrates

True, ever little bit does help. Some foods will contain more nitrate, such as those that are algae based. http://reeframblings.co.uk/?p=222 And take this with a grain of salt: Food: Levels of Nitrates and Phosphates in Each

    Food & Nitrates

Proteins break down in the nitrogen cycle and end up as nitrate, some foods may contain nitrate but no matter what all "food" will all end up as nitrate, either as fish poop or just decomposing bits of food in the tank.

    Hana Phosphate Meter- opinions?

I must say I am impressed with Hanna's tech support. I have an issue with my checker reporting bad battery, it works about 50% of the time, most often when it starts it reports Bad Bat even with a new battery installed, it even craps out in the middle of a test. I called Hanna and they said they...

    Hana Phosphate Meter- opinions?

Shoot, I bought the phosphate HI 713 checker last night. I did not get the ULR phosphorus checker HI 736. I read the thread on reef central saying the ULR is more accurate. Oh well. I tested three times last night and got .07 ppm .00 ppm and .06ppm. So I guess its around .07 +/- 5% With...
