Bigfish's swim into the sea - a tank journal

Lanthanum 100% works to lower phosphates. I was just about to post my guide but looks like @BAYMAC and @Darkxerox beat me to it. I am a big fan of lanthanum, but given that we have certainly identified the problem here - just stop feeding so much, do a bunch of water changes, and see how...

Bigfish's swim into the sea - a tank journal

I'm using a Hydros controller. If you're forced into 1 minute increments you're kind of missing one of the primary advantages of the plank. I can practically guarantee that 1 full minute worth of pellets is too much unless you've got a shitload of fish and a big tank. I happen to have a...

Bigfish's swim into the sea - a tank journal

Honestly if any of your pellets are even reaching the sandbed, you're probably feeding too much (and/or don't have enough flow). Feed smaller amounts more frequently. This is the beauty of the plank.

Bigfish's swim into the sea - a tank journal

Pellets come out significantly faster than freeze dried, yes. It’s why many of us (myself included) have two planks - one with each type of food. I run the mysis plank for many minutes at a time, and the pellet plank only for seconds.

Bigfish's swim into the sea - a tank journal

Running 6 minutes of pellets on a plank feeder into your tank with pretty minimal coral load every day is the issue here, case closed! Get that under control (don’t starve your fish though!) and do a few water changes and you’ll be gucci.

    White marking on anthia

Sorry to make light of your situation - I have not had much luck with Anthias myself, and stopped trying. They always seem to have some issue, and just aren't very robust fish. And there's always an asshole among them.

    Help needed

Couldn't tell you what the bottle recommends, I adjusted my dosing based on ICP results until it was more or less dialed in. That came to around 12ml/daily in my 225g tank, IIRC. Edit - bottle says 5ml (one capful) per 20 gallons of tank water twice a week. So the bottle recommendation for me...

Bigfish's swim into the sea - a tank journal

Not sure what feeder you have, but on mine (the plank) 6 minutes is a very long time indeed for pellets - they come out of there quickly. Are your fish consuming them all?

Need a copperband that's eating prepared foods?

I think most people probably just underfeed. Not necessarily in quantity but in frequency - they need to eat often, like anthias. I feed a LOT, many many times per day. Mine is a voracious eater and still VERY slow to put on weight, and will quickly drop weight if I get lazy with feeding. Many...

    Help needed

I don't grow chaeto at all (never had much luck) but I was dosing CG for a while for my corals, and have to say it was pretty successful. I do monthly ICPs and the trace element make up of CG was nearly perfect for my tank, just have to watch the iron levels. It immediately turned colors around...

    Mastertronic automatic tester experience?

I owned the original MasterTronic. Too many reagents to manage, too many moving parts, too much to calibrate. You also can't really trust the Mg tests anyway, and I don't need to test nitrate/phosphate that often. Now that it includes Alk, it might be a compelling purchase for new tanks to keep...

Bigfish's swim into the sea - a tank journal

Why would a piece of filter floss sitting in your sump for a long time cause elevated nutrients? I don’t think that’s right. Obviously it’s not doing you much good filtering anything, but it’s not adding nutrients to your tank either. Probably growing a bunch of funk and looks really ugly, but...

Need a copperband that's eating prepared foods?

Totally, here's mine: Picked it up from Kenny about a year ago. Eats frozen and freeze-dried mysis from the auto feeder, keeps the tank aiptasia free, and gets along well with all the other fish. And I didn't kill a ton of them in the process!

Need a copperband that's eating prepared foods?

@under_water_ninja the longnose i picked up last weekend is eating now and seems to be doing pretty well so far. For everyone constantly struggling with aiptasia, i would highly recommend picking up one of the CBBs from Kenny.

    Thomas' CADE Reef 1500 S2

It's such a nice, calm, relieved vibe in the tank after you pull out a real chaotic asshole of a fish. I feel even the fish are like "bro...thanks for that, guy was a DICKhead"
