All-for-reef vs 2 part vs Kalk?

I dose something like 72 mL per day of AFR into my 100 L system. It ends up being around 4 dKH per day. I use the full strength AFR and you can’t dilute it (the high ionic strength prevents bacterial growth). My AFR is dosed into a tee on my DI auto top off line and the DI kicks on a few...

What mini fridge to use for dosing?

Top front. That light blue surface that is on most of the inside is the cooling surface. I don’t think you want to drill through that. The spots I drilled through are just foam with two layers of hard plastic.

Monterey Bay Aquarium Behind the Scenes Tour 5/19/23

Hey all, meet me here on Friday at 11:55. A gentle reminder that the tour will be starting at NOON SHARP and we can’t wait for anybody to join late. Please plan on getting there on time and taking care of all water/restroom/etc duties in advance. Thanks and see you then!

Does any one have Monterey Bay Aquarium tickets?

Sorry, but we can’t provide any free passes or discounts.

    SF house explosion

That’s an odd one. My dad was an ATF special agent for 25 years and I think he never wore a helmet. And it looks like a bike helmet? Wtf?

For people directing outdoor air to your skimmer ... did you drill a hole in your house?

Sorry, I missed this, but what paper are you referring to? Those numbers seem insane and not possible in water. It might be measuring oxygen inside tissue or something? Where is the link to the paper? Edit: Okay, found the original paper. They were basically measuring isolated reef flats at a...

Let’s chat about the meter via email. Give it to you during the tour. :)

What mini fridge to use for dosing?

Yup. I haven’t had any issues with the humidity in the fridge affecting the pump performance overtime. YMMV. I used some silica packs for a while but eventually got lazy and stopped.

For people directing outdoor air to your skimmer ... did you drill a hole in your house?

Hey John, you’re totally right. Photosynthesis changes all this. I should have said it’s best to do this first thing in the morning before lights come on. It’s fair to say that if your DO is 100% or near it at that time then your gas exchange is good.

What mini fridge to use for dosing?

You may be okay. Depending on the product some of that stuff can sit for that long and still be okay. But I’d compare it to constantly eating food that’s been left out at room temp overnight. Just not great for you. Aside from any nutritional concerns, I’d think you will end up doing more...

For people directing outdoor air to your skimmer ... did you drill a hole in your house?

Dissolved oxygen is almost always super high in a typical reef aquarium regardless of skimmer/no skimmer. Everyone should test this themselves if given the chance. I have a Milwaukee DO meter I don’t use any more that I’d be happy to donate to BAR. You can sorta use DO as a proxy for how much...

What mini fridge to use for dosing?

I would certainly purge it. If you don’t, whatever is sitting in the tubing between the fridge and the tank is just sitting there at room temperature. If you’re dosing massive amounts of whatever and it’s only sitting at room temperature for a few hours, maybe not such a big deal. In my case the...

For people directing outdoor air to your skimmer ... did you drill a hole in your house?

There can be a massive difference in pCO2 between indoors and outdoors particularly in modern homes. It would be fairly normal for pCO2 indoors to be 1600 ppm or about 4x higher than outdoor air. Highly dependent on number of people and how well sealed up your home is.

What mini fridge to use for dosing?

That one has been running about 18 months now and solidly keeps the temp at 38-40°F https://cooluli.com/collections/concord-edition

    Fathead anthias

I had a few of them at Steinhart. One got real big! Honestly never tried feeding them small flake or pellet but if they are taking mysids I bet you could get away with one or two feedings a day. How long have you had it?

    COPEPOD CULTURE FOR MANDARIN DRAGONET

I would not hatch artemia in a tank with corals or fishes. There is a good reason we do it in a separate vessel and then “purify” the nauplii. Assuming you’ve decapsulated the cysts, the nauplii hatch out of a thin clear shell that is left behind. I suspect these would clog coral polyps and/or...

    Dosing nitrate

Might just be the difference between organic vs inorganic phosphate. Hobby tests will only detect the latter of course. Organic phosphate can be consumed by bacteria and then the cells are removed by skimming. In short a pathway for phosphate to go from food to removal from your tank without...

    Dosing nitrate

All food that comes from a once living organism will have phosphate. Amino acids have some nitrogen but no phosphorus. That’s a good food for SPS if you want to increase N but not P, but it’s usually dosed in such small amounts.
