back from taiwan after 10 years and just got a used reefer 170. tried to stay away but the hobby keeps pulling me back [godfather reference]. definitely experiencing sticker shock but looking forward to learning and getting back into the great bay area community. stay wet.

Welcome back! Sticker shock will only be half of it. There's new equipment, the technology iot everything, and crazy coral marketing, but don't let it overwhelm you. There's a lot of fluff but the fundamentals remain largely unchanged.

What was the reefing scene like in Taiwan?

good, same same but different. people don't seem to run as much backup/failsafes. wild live stock is cheaper and more varied. rhyzos are $100-300. named sps is much harder to get and more expensive. nicer hardware is also harder and more expensive, but decent custom tanks, nsw andn electricy are soooo cheap. thats my impression, but if you read Chinese check out ph84.idv.tw to get an idea.

do people still share cups of livesand or detritus to increase tank diversity? if so, anyone got some to share? I drive around the bay for work so can pick up during the day anywhere near 880, 101 and up to novato.
