Although my azoox tank is still in the beginning stages, I already am quite a azoox nut. Anyone else in the bay area with an azoox tank?
 
Not for a while but it's on the radar when I get the current setup completely stable and trouble free. I'm a big fan of softies and gorgonians.

BTW - please keep us updated with the tank build. It would be very interesting to follow the progress of the tanks break-in and learn from any issues that may arise. They're a interesting group of organisms.

Missed an "a" in my post :)

I decided on a different route... doing a tidal mangrove system instead. I'm designing a full azoox system for work though :D
 
Matt Wandell is on this site and he has the azoo tank at the Steinhart. It will be really tricky to have a softies and azoos in the same system because the nutrient load to feed the azoos will be really high (there really is no way around it when you have to feed them so much) and adding enough light to grow softies will also make the nuisance algea go crazy. In fact, Matt was telling me that it was pretty hard to add a refugium with macro algea to his system because the nuisance algrea would overwhelm, outcompete, and cover the macro algea.

If I were you I would stick to just azoos and add just enough light to see the corals. Then go wild feeding them.

Patrick... Joost is a volunteer at CAS and works under Matt & Rich :)

As far as research goes, he's been very active on the few azoox forums out there. In fact Azoox.org plans on asking him to join Team Azoox :)

I volunteer for Rich on Sundays and always feed Matts tank, its a beautiful setup.
I think the softies GDawson is talking about are Dendronephthya, Scleronephthya etc. all azoox. I agree that there would be downsides on adding photosynthetic corals to a azoox tank and I don't plan to, but it is possible. There is a beautiful Italian tank on RC that has a mix of both. I also agree that there are downsides on having a macro tank, but again it is possible there are several tanks on RC that use a refugium.
I certainly plan on doing lots of water changes, and a big skimmer. I'll also add biopellets. I'll start a build thread in a while.

FWIW www.Azoox.org is now live. You'll recognize a few names on the ADMIN, MOD and Team list :)
